Manila-based photographer Aaron Favila has been awarded the prestigious 2026 World Press Photo award for a breathtaking image that captured a bride standing in floodwaters during a monsoon in the Philippines. Favila’s compelling photograph features a bride, poised yet surrounded by nature’s fury, in front of the historic Barásoain Church, which had succumbed to severe flooding following a recent monsoon.

The event that led to this remarkable capture unfolded in July 2025 when Favila received a message from a friend on assignment nearby. She was photographing the aftermath of the intense rainfall at Barásoain Church and mentioned that a wedding was about to take place despite the adverse conditions. “It was hard to believe that people were getting married in those circumstances, but she told me the ceremony was scheduled to start at three, leaving me roughly an hour to get there,” Favila recounted.

Determined to document this unusual scenario, Favila donned waders and embarked on a race against time. The journey would prove challenging; he noted that even in dry conditions, reaching the church would typically take about 40 minutes. However, with the floods complicating matters, he travelled as far as possible by car before encountering deep waters that halted his progress. “I ended up hitching a ride with a rescue truck, and my timing was perfect. I arrived just as the bride was about to enter the church,” he explained.

Upon his arrival, Favila quickly began to document the surreal scene unfolding around him. He captured images of the groomsmen standing knee-deep in water and shoes strategically lined up in pews to avoid getting wet. Yet, it was the photograph of the bride—drenched yet dignified—that would ultimately earn him international acclaim.

In the striking image, the bride is depicted with her back to the camera, standing in approximately a foot of floodwater. The flowing lace train of her gown drifts behind her, creating a vivid contrast against the stillness of the grand wooden doors of the church. Favila subsequently learned more about the couple, Jamaica and Jade, who opted to proceed with their wedding despite the anticipated flooding. They had visited the church the day before, discovering that rising waters were inevitable. “Both came from regions accustomed to flooding, so they were familiar with the risks,” Favila noted. “Their decision reflected a deep commitment to their plan, having been a couple for many years.”
