Brenda Young, a 57-year-old social worker from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has become one of the first participants in this groundbreaking study following her own experience with the condition after the traumatic loss of her mother in November 2025.

Shortly after witnessing her mother’s death, Young experienced an intense and overwhelming pain in her chest. Initially interpreted as a heart attack, further examination revealed she was suffering from takotsubo cardiomyopathy, commonly known as broken heart syndrome. The condition mimics heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain and difficulty breathing, but unlike a heart attack, it is not result of arterial blockage. Instead, it is characterised by a significant weakening of the heart muscle linked to severe stress or strong emotions.

Young’s participation is part of an extensive seven-year study being conducted by the University of Aberdeen, which aims to recruit nearly 1,000 patients across 40 hospitals. The trial aims to determine the efficacy of a class of medications known as renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors that are designed to relax blood vessels, potentially providing a long-term treatment option for those affected by this syndrome.
Professor Dana Dawson, the chair of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Aberdeen and the trial’s lead researcher, expressed optimism about the study’s potential. This research will test for the first time whether RAS inhibitors could prevent deaths, heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and recurring takotsubo episodes following an initial incident.”
Having dedicated over 15 years to researching broken heart syndrome, Dawson is excited about the possibilities this trial presents in finding a dependable, evidence-based treatment protocol for patients. She acknowledged the significant emotional and physical toll that takotsubo syndrome can impose on individuals, stating, “Our hope is to establish the first therapy that enhances survival and diminishes the burdens associated with this condition.”
Dawson further emphasized the study’s dual potential: “We may discover a therapy that proves valuable for these patients, or we might need to direct our efforts towards alternative treatments if these are found to be ineffective.” The results could ultimately transform the management of takotsubo syndrome, contributing to better quality of life for those affected.
