N.J. Man Gets Life for Family Massacre After 8-Year-Old Niece Fought Back, Leaving Evidence That Convicted Him

A New Jersey man has been sentenced to four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole following his conviction for the brutal murders of his brother’s family. Paul Caneiro, aged 59, was found guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Keith Caneiro, his wife Jennifer, and their children, Jesse and Sophia, in November 2018.

The grim details of the case emerged during the trial, revealing a chilling account of familial betrayal. The tragedy unfolded just two days before Thanksgiving when Caneiro allegedly lured his brother outside their home in Colt’s Neck, where he shot him. Inside the house, he proceeded to murder Keith’s wife Jennifer and their two children, 11-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Sophia.

Sophia’s injuries were particularly harrowing; medical experts testified that she suffered 17 stab wounds, including a fatal one to her eye, as she attempted to evade her uncle. Reports indicated that both children likely died from smoke inhalation after Caneiro set fire to their home, which he attempted to disguise as an accident.
