At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Kristen Stewart and Woody Harrelson shared insights into their first collaboration, ‘Full Phil,’ directed by Quentin Dupieux. This charming film portrays a father-daughter relationship set against the delectable backdrop of Parisian cuisine, which made its debut on May 17.

The story revolves around the duo as they embark on a gastronomic journey through the French capital. Stewart, reflecting on her experience, revealed that playing her character required her to consume an array of rich French dishes throughout filming. “I only puked once,” Stewart remarked, recounting a particularly challenging moment when the scent of butter from a cauliflower mash overwhelmed her, despite the chef’s assurances that only vegetable oil was used.
Stewart, 36, explained that the emphasis on authentic, sumptuous French food added a unique layer to their performance. “They wanted it to taste really good and reflect the French essence. I was like, ‘I’m going to die. I’m not supposed to actually perish,’” she joked, highlighting the rigours of embodying a character who eats ‘all day long’ on screen without the aid of a ‘spit bucket.’
Harrelson, who has adhered to a vegan lifestyle for over three decades, quipped that he would have appreciated having that option while filming. The actor, known for his roles in various acclaimed projects, elaborated on the film’s narrative, where his character experiences a deep, almost symbiotic connection with Stewart’s character, sharing in her culinary escapades. “She’s a voracious bottomless pit, eating her feelings,” he quipped, as Stewart poignantly articulated the significance of the eating sequences, describing them as hurdles that added depth to their performances and symbolism to the narrative.
This film marks the first time Stewart and Harrelson have joined forces, despite having known each other for years. Harrelson reminisced about meeting Stewart when she was roughly 17, after hearing rave reviews from Sean Penn about her talent. He recalled being impressed after watching her performance in the 2007 film ‘Into the Wild.’ “It was love at first sight,” Stewart later confessed, noting her fandom for Harrelson since witnessing his work in the 1992 classic ‘White Men Can’t Jump.’
Their paths crossed again in a more personal context following that initial meeting, when they hung out and quickly became friends over a meal at a vegan restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. “So when this popped up, I was like, ‘I’ve wanted to work with this guy forever,’” Stewart noted, underscoring the significance of teaming up for ‘Full Phil.’
Following its successful premiere at Cannes, ‘Full Phil’ is still awaiting a release date. Meanwhile, Stewart is set to produce and star in ‘The Wrong Girls’—a project directed by her wife, Dylan Meyer—alongside a miniseries entitled ‘The Challenger’ and the film ‘Flesh of the Gods.’ Harrelson, on the other hand, is preparing to take on a comedic role in the series ‘Brothers,’ which will also star Matthew McConaughey.
As both actors continue to expand their careers through diverse projects, their collaborative journey in ‘Full Phil’ marks a new chapter in their longstanding friendship, one that promises to resonate with audiences who appreciate both culinary delights and the intricacies of personal relationships.
