Abby Phillip, a well-known CNN anchor, has exciting news to share: she and her husband, Marcus Richardson, are expecting their second child. The couple, who are already parents to four-year-old Naomi, revealed to PEOPLE that they will welcome a baby boy in October.

Phillip, 37, expressed her joy about expanding their family, stating, “We are overjoyed to be expanding our family!” Their daughter Naomi is reportedly looking forward to stepping into her new role as a big sister. “Naomi is already preparing to be an excellent big sister to the little boy who will join us later this year,” Phillip added.

The journey to having a second child has not been without its challenges. Phillip shared that their path to conceiving their second child involved the use of in vitro fertilisation (IVF), a decision that many families face today. “Our journey to a second child looked a little different from our first. Like so many families, we were able to conceive with the help of IVF,” she explained.

Despite the obstacles, Phillip conveyed her gratitude for their success, praising what she refers to as “God’s perfect timing.” She also took a moment to express empathy for other families who may still be navigating their own struggles with conception. “I’m also holding hope in my heart for all the families who are still waiting in their journey,” she said.
The emotional and physical toll of IVF can be significant, and Phillip acknowledged the difficulties they encountered along the way. “The process was challenging to manage, both emotionally and physically, but I’m thrilled to say we arrived at a beautiful place,” she shared.
Phillip’s first experience of motherhood was shared with PEOPLE in 2021 when she welcomed her daughter Naomi. At that time, she couldn’t hide her excitement, announcing, “Marcus and I are so happy to announce that Naomi Angelina Richardson arrived bright and early on Monday morning perfectly happy, healthy and ready to eat. Mom and baby are feeling great.”
In that same announcement, Phillip explained the meaning behind Naomi’s name. “Her first name means ‘pleasant one’ and she is already living up to it and spoiling her mum and dad as a blissfully calm baby,” she said, while also sharing the significance of Naomi’s middle name, Angelina, which honours her late maternal grandmother who passed away in 2014.
Last September, Phillip recounted the unique challenges of being pregnant while covering the intense events surrounding the 2020 presidential election. “Shortly after the [2020 presidential] election, I was pregnant covering all the madness while in my first trimester and having morning sickness,” she recalled. The combination of work-related stress and the physical demands of pregnancy made that period exceptionally difficult for her. “Working with the intensity that I did post-election while carrying a child was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Between that and the delivery, I could accomplish anything at this point,” she remarked.
Now, as she anticipates the arrival of her second child, Phillip seems to embrace the upcoming challenges and joys that motherhood will bring once again. Her openness about her experiences not only highlights the personal aspects of her life but also serves as a source of encouragement for others who may be on similar journeys.
With Phillip’s perspective and Richardson’s support, the family appears ready to add another layer of love to their home. As they prepare to welcome their baby boy, there’s no doubt that Abby, Marcus, and Naomi will create a nurturing environment filled with warmth and shared experiences.
