In an astonishing feat of endurance, ultramarathoner Arda Saatci has successfully completed a grueling 372-mile run from Death Valley to Santa Monica. This remarkable journey, marked by extreme conditions, saw Saatci navigate the harsh realities of heat, elevation changes, and sleep deprivation. His efforts have not only achieved a personal milestone but have also captured widespread attention across social media platforms.

Born in Germany, Saatci has a reputation for taking on ambitious running challenges. His previous endeavours include an extraordinary 1,864-mile ultramarathon from Berlin to New York City, which he completed in an impressive 74 days. Last year, he pushed his limits even further by running the entire length of Japan, a distance of approximately 1,881 miles. With such a background, Saatci sought to escalate the difficulty of his next challenge, ultimately deciding on the intense route from Death Valley National Park—the hottest, driest, and lowest national park in the United States—to Santa Monica.
Saatci spent ten months meticulously preparing for the demanding run. His training regime included daily marathons combined with strength exercises, and he focused on sleep deprivation techniques to help acclimatise his body to extreme conditions. “I would do night runs, stay awake for 24 hours, and then run a marathon to understand how my body reacts in those situations,” he explained. This preparation, however, did little to quell his nerves as the date of the challenge approached, as he faced uncharted waters on this long-distance run.
The ultramarathon began on May 5 at Badwater Basin, deep within Death Valley. Extending over the next five days, Saatci completed more than 604 kilometres—equivalent to over 14 marathons—while ascending nearly 6,000 metres. Midway through the run, around the 200-mile mark, Saatci experienced a dangerous episode of heat stroke, complicating matters further with hallucinations that ensued from his body’s struggles. Thankfully, with swift intervention from his support team to regulate his temperature and allow for a brief rest, Saatci was able to continue the challenge, albeit at a significant toll to his physical and mental state.
Throughout the 123-hour odyssey, Saatci managed to survive on a mere seven to eight hours of sleep. In terms of sustenance, he consumed an extensive number of calories, primarily focusing on carbohydrates and electrolytes. “Cakes, waffles—everything that has a lot of calories,” he laughed, reflecting the lighter side of his nutritional strategy amidst the physically taxing ordeal.
While many might resort to music or distractions during such taxing feats, Saatci chose to remain in tune with his thoughts for motivation. “Most of the time, I keep in touch with my inner voice,” he articulated. This approach, alongside a conscious choice to avoid tracking real-time viewer numbers on his livestream, allowed him to maintain focus on the monumental nature of his challenge.
Despite thousands of viewers tuning in to witness the run, the emotional climax arrived at the finish line where his mother awaited him holding a promise of ice cream they had made prior to the challenge. “When I saw my mother standing there with the ice cream behind her, my heart was swelling,” he recalled, reminiscing about the emotional culmination of the event that coincided with Mother’s Day.
Now back home, Saatci is focusing on his recovery from inflammation in his hips and knees and is relishing the time spent with family and friends. His determination and mental fortitude remain evident as he considers future challenges, including opportunities for personal growth and further explorations of endurance.
“I always say it’s you versus you,” Saatci commented, encapsulating his philosophy on competition and personal development. He encourages others to focus on their own journeys, urging them to give their best every day and to never lose sight of their goals. In sharing his experience, he hopes to inspire others not only in sports but across all walks of life.
