New York Teen Who Lured Friend to His Death Learns Fate

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 years to life imprisonment for his role in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in Syracuse, New York. Ja’Kye Jamison was convicted of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in relation to the death of Karon Works in March.

The tragic incident occurred on December 12, 2023, at Lower Onondaga Park, where Works was shot multiple times. Prosecutors alleged that Jamison, alongside two accomplices, lured the victim to the park before the shooting took place. At the time of the crime, Jamison was also a teenager, only 16 years old.

According to the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office, evidence suggested that Jamison had been in contact with Karon Works in the hours leading up to the incident. Chief Assistant District Attorney Robert Moran highlighted the extensive communication between the two, which included phone calls and text messages exchanged in the two hours before the fatal event.

During the attack, Works suffered six gunshot wounds, including shots to his back and legs. The severity of his injuries ultimately led to his death, marking a devastating loss for his family and community.

Jamison’s defence attorney, Graeme Spicer, contested the prosecution’s narrative, asserting that his client was merely a witness to the shooting and not an active participant. However, these claims did not sway the jury, leading to Jamison’s conviction.

At the sentencing hearing, Karon’s uncle, Rickey Brown, expressed his outrage towards Jamison’s lack of remorse for the crime. He described Jamison as “unrepentant, remorseless and incorrigible,” suggesting that the only awareness displayed by the young man throughout the proceedings was one of guilt.

Jamison’s case is part of a larger legal situation involving his two associates. Ny’Zhon Thomas, one of the accomplices, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September 2023, receiving a sentence of 24 years to life. Another accomplice, Caleb Gibson, is set to face trial for murder in the upcoming months, having pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of youth violence in communities, raising questions about the circumstances that lead young individuals to resort to such extreme actions. The loss of Karon Works has profoundly affected his family and friends, prompting calls for greater measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
