Kouri Richins, recently convicted of murdering her husband Eric, addressed the court during her sentencing hearing on May 13, opting to send a heartfelt message to her sons rather than insisting on her innocence. Dressed in a vibrant yellow prison jumpsuit, Richins spoke directly to her children, expressing deep affection for them. “The one thing I need you boys to know… I did not abandon you,” she stated. Richins lamented that for the past two years, since her arrest, she has been unable to communicate with her three sons due to the actions of her in-laws. She emphasized that the family of her late husband has consistently barred her attempts to send gifts, letters, or make phone calls to the children.
Richins shared with the court that each heartfelt gesture, including birthday presents and Christmas cards, had been returned to her, reinforcing her plea that she had not purposely distanced herself from her boys. “I did not just walk out of your lives one day to never return. To never call. Never show up,” she insisted. Her emotional address focused on the love she feels for her children, rather than on her legal plight.
Although she maintained her innocence regarding her husband’s death, Kouri acknowledged her own imperfections. “I have done plenty of things I’m not proud of,” she admitted, referencing mistakes she has made throughout her life.
