James Copenhaver, a veteran who sustained serious injuries during an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, passed away on September 23 at the age of 76. The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed his death, which took place in Pittsburgh.

Copenhaver’s injuries were the result of a shooting incident that occurred on July 13, 2024, during a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He suffered considerable damage, including nerve injuries and harm to his colon, following the attack which left him fighting for his life. Following the shooting, the Allegheny Health Network had reported that he was in serious but stable condition.
The House Republicans expressed their condolences on social media, reflecting on the impact of Copenhaver’s life and the struggles he faced following the violent incident. “Jim endured unimaginable hardship with strength and perseverance,” the party stated. They extended their thoughts to his family, offering prayers during this difficult time.
Trump also paid tribute to Copenhaver via his Truth Social account, where he referred to him as a “true American Patriot.” He lamented the loss, stating, “After being wounded while protecting his family, Jim showed tremendous bravery, courageously continuing to FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT.” Trump highlighted Copenhaver’s spirit and resilience, expressing his condolences to Copenhaver’s wife, Marianne, and the family saying, “God bless you all.”
The tragic shooting incident not only claimed Copenhaver’s life but also resulted in the death of firefighter Corey Comperatore, who was killed during the attack. Comperatore was 50 years old and a father of two. Another victim, David Dutch, who was also injured in the shooting, has since recovered and was discharged from Allegheny General Hospital.
The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the individual responsible for the shooting. Crooks, who was only 20 years old at the time of the incident, opened fire at the rally and was later identified through DNA evidence. Following the incident, Trump described his own experience during the attack and the immediate realisation that something was gravely wrong when he heard shots fired.
In the wake of Copenhaver’s death, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro released a statement of condolence, underscoring the ongoing grief faced by families impacted by the violence. He expressed sympathy not only to Copenhaver’s loved ones but also reflected on the struggles of Comperatore’s family, remarking on the empty seats they both now face at their respective dinner tables.
Governor Shapiro stood firm against such acts of violence, urging the need for unity and the elimination of divisive rhetoric. “We all have a responsibility to take down the temperature, rise above hateful rhetoric, and search for a brighter future for this nation,” he affirmed.
Joseph Feldman, the attorney representing the Copenhaver family, recognised him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, emphasising the lasting impact of his life and character.
