In an inspiring story of resilience, stroke survivor Carl Haydel was able to propose to his girlfriend Rachel Dingle after months of dedicated occupational therapy. This touching moment unfolded against the backdrop of their shared journey, highlighting the profound impact that rehabilitation can have on personal lives.

Last August, 59-year-old Haydel was struck by a car, resulting in a stroke that significantly affected his mobility and strength. It was not until four months after his accident that he began working with occupational therapist Amanda Cable at The Claiborne assisted living facility in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. By early February, Haydel entered a therapy session with an exciting plan that would change his life forever.

Despite having only recently rekindled their relationship—having known each other in high school in the 1980s—Haydel and Dingle had discussed marriage informally. Haydel sought to make this commitment official and enlisted Cable’s help to create a memorable proposal. “I wanted to do something truly special for Rachel,” he remarked.
Planning the proposal took meticulous effort. Haydel envisioned doing it in front of a “LOVE” sign in downtown New Orleans on April 11, just a day before Dingle’s 60th birthday. For the plan to succeed, he needed to focus on rehabilitation to regain the physical capability to kneel, hold the engagement ring, and execute the proposal smoothly.
Cable expressed excitement about the challenge, stating, “It was everything that occupational therapy embodies—meaningful and functional.” The duo set about breaking down the proposal into manageable steps, including kneeling, retrieving the ring from his backpack, and presenting it to Dingle. They also prepared for the possibility of nerves that might accompany the big moment.
Alongside the physical preparations, they crafted a heartfelt speech for Haydel to recite during the proposal. His words conveyed deep emotion: “Rachel, you have done so much for me and you have brought me back to life. I want to take care of you for the rest of my life. I love you. Will you marry me?”
In a thoughtful twist, Cable suggested that Haydel incorporate a message in Hebrew to express his love in a unique way. Although the translation turned out to be backward, the effort demonstrated his commitment and dedication to making the moment unforgettable. Haydel used his affected hand to trace the letters, creating a special engagement gift for Dingle.
On the day of the proposal, anxiety loomed over Haydel as he prepared to take the plunge. To his relief, Dingle accepted his proposal, clearly taken by surprise. “She wasn’t expecting it at all,” Haydel recalled with joy.
Cable expressed immense pride in her patient, reflecting on the rewarding nature of her work: “When he accomplished the ‘secret mission’ and she said yes, it was a tremendous feeling. Helping people realise their dreams is what motivates me as an occupational therapist.”
Both Haydel and Dingle are now looking towards the future, with Haydel expressing gratitude for the support he received throughout his recovery. “Therapy has done so much for me, with Amanda particularly stepping up to make this moment special,” he stated.
Though they have not yet set a wedding date, there are discussions about tying the knot in January. The couple is excited about embarking on this new chapter of their lives together, with Cable confident that they will build a beautiful life ahead.
The heartwarming events have resonated widely, with FOX Rehabilitation sharing a video montage of Haydel’s therapy journey, highlighting his progress from being wheelchair-bound to being able to kneel for his proposal. The post garnered significant attention online, reflecting the powerful narrative of perseverance and love.
As Haydel and Dingle prepare for their future, their story stands as a testament to the possibilities of recovery and the importance of support systems in overcoming life’s challenges.
