A mother’s heartbreaking journey through grief has come to light following the tragic death of her son, Garrett Nicholas, who lost his life in an accident near West Chester University in Pennsylvania. At just 21, Nicholas was a thriving college junior with aspirations of joining his stepfather’s construction business.

Garrett’s mother, Traci Hafner, reflects on their special bond, calling her son her “rainbow baby” after experiencing a previous loss. The joy of his arrival filled her heart, and she says she appreciated every moment they shared. “I just never took anything for granted,” Hafner commented. “I feel like he was on loan to me, and the world had bigger things for him to do.”

From a young age, Nicholas made a lasting impression on those around him. Hafner describes him as having a captivating presence and a contagious smile. “He wasn’t one to seek attention; it came naturally to him,” she stated. Tragically, their relationship took a devastating turn when Nicholas was fatally struck by a vehicle on April 12 while crossing South High Street.
On the day before the incident, Hafner and her husband, Travis, had spent quality time with Nicholas during a Parents Weekend event at West Chester University. They bonded with his friends, and Nicholas expressed that it was the best day of his life—a sentiment that gave his mother solace. “As a mum, what more can you ask for?” she remembered.
The police reported that Nicholas was struck in the early hours on a Sunday. The driver of the vehicle stopped nearby and has been cooperating with authorities. “It’s a terrible situation,” Hafner remarked, acknowledging the heartache faced by both families involved.
In the wake of her son’s untimely death, Hafner is focused on preserving his memory through acts of kindness, starting the #BeLikeGarrett movement on social media. Nicholas’s compassionate nature was evident at the hospital, where many of his friends and fraternity brothers gathered to pay their respects. In a final act of generosity, he donated his organs, a choice he made at the age of 16. Thanks to the Gift of Life Donor Program, his gifts are expected to save the lives of three individuals.
Community support has flooded in for the grieving family. A GoFundMe campaign launched by Nicholas’s best friend has amassed nearly £100,000, providing much-needed assistance during this difficult time. On Mother’s Day, Hafner received an outpouring of love and sympathy, with her home adorned with flowers and cards from those wishing to honour her son’s memory.
Although the pain of losing her son weighs heavily on her heart, Hafner finds comfort in the significant impact Garrett had during his brief time on Earth. “It’s painful to know he’s gone,” she admits, “but knowing how much he meant to others helps me cope.”
As she continues to navigate through this immense loss, Hafner cherishes the enduring connection she has with her son, encapsulated in his “beautiful blue eyes,” a part of him that still lives on through his organ donations. “It’s tough to reconcile, but it’s also quite magical,” she reflects.
Traci Hafner’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones. As she aims to inspire others to embody Garrett’s kindness, her story resonates deeply, encouraging many to live a life filled with compassion and gratitude.
