HBO’s comedic series ‘Rooster’, featuring acclaimed actor Steve Carell, has officially received a renewal for its second season. Co-creators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses shared that they have a well-defined narrative structure planned for the series, comprising a “beginning, middle, and end.” This ensemble comedy, which has captivated audiences since its debut, is anticipated to explore more of Carell’s character’s misadventures on a college campus in the upcoming season.

Bill Lawrence, who has previously brought well-loved shows such as ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Shrinking’ to the forefront, expressed his excitement about ‘Rooster’. In an interview, Lawrence revealed that he proposed the concept with a structured storyline, much like he did with his previous projects. “If we’re fortunate enough to be able to tell that story, we know what it is,” he stated, indicating that the narrative arc is already firmly in place.
Although the second season is still in the pipeline, both Lawrence and Tarses have confirmed they have already outlined the storyline for the character played by Greg Russo. In a conversation prior to the series’ premiere in March, they shared their ambitions for the show, stating that they had anticipated extending the narrative beyond the first season right from the start.
“One of the exciting things about streaming television is being able to plan a comprehensive story,” Lawrence noted. Tarses humorously added that he would be willing to continue working on the show indefinitely, while Lawrence quipped about needing to consider leaving after one more year. This camaraderie between the creators reflects the positive environment fostered during production.
The first season of ‘Rooster’ is nearing its conclusion, with the finale set to air on May 10. Lawrence expressed his gratitude towards Warner Bros. Television and HBO for their solid partnership during the project’s development, describing the opportunity as a “career highlight” for Tarses and himself.
In addition to Carell, ‘Rooster’ boasts a talented cast including Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai. The plot centres around Carell’s character, an author, who resolves to extend his stay at a university to forge a deeper connection with his daughter, portrayed by Clive.
During a press conference held in New York City, Carell discussed the camaraderie developed amongst the cast, noting that joining ‘Rooster’ felt akin to being part of an ensemble. He remarked on the kindness and generosity of the team, which reminded him of his time on ‘The Office’. “We all shared a goal — that includes the cast, crew, writers, and producers. Everyone was dedicated to making a quality show,” he reflected.
Both Lawrence and Tarses have previously highlighted the comedy’s roots in showcasing Carell’s humour. Lawrence noted that the comedic landscape has greatly been influenced by Carell’s unique style. He remarked, “There’s none of us that weren’t drastically affected by the way that Steve does comedy.”
The inaugural season’s finale of ‘Rooster’ is slated to air at 10 p.m. ET on HBO, followed by availability for streaming on HBO Max. With the promising renewal for the second season, fans eagerly await more of the charm and laughter that the show is sure to offer. As the series continues to grow in popularity, the dynamic between the characters and the storytelling will undoubtedly keep audiences engaged.
