Passengers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship have recently found themselves at the centre of a hantavirus outbreak, causing a surge in media attention and online speculation regarding their experiences. Kasem Ibn Hattuta, a travel blogger on board, has chosen to address these discussions, clarifying that the limited social media postings from passengers stem from a desire for privacy rather than any imposed restrictions.

Hattuta is one of only a few passengers who have actively shared updates on platforms like TikTok and Instagram since the outbreak began. He communicated with PEOPLE via email, stating, “I’ve seen lots of speculation on social media about why most passengers aren’t sharing their experiences. The truth is, we have Wifi and can post freely; however, it’s overwhelming to have so much media exposure all at once. Many people simply prefer to maintain their privacy.”
The situation aboard the MV Hondius escalated following the death of a Dutch passenger from the hantavirus on 11 April. Since then, three passengers have died, and several more have exhibited symptoms of the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that out of numerous suspected cases, three have tested positive for the virus, which is usually associated with contact with rodent droppings.

As the cruise ship makes its way to Spain’s Canary Islands after leaving Cape Verde, concerns about the virus remain high. On 6 May, the vessel successfully evacuated three sick passengers, and the cruise operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, has assured that no symptomatic individuals remain on board. Hattuta described a sense of relief among passengers following the evacuation, stating, “While there was some concern about the health of those who were sick, the atmosphere has returned to that of a regular day at sea.”

Reports from aboard the ship indicate a calm environment, with passengers engaging in activities such as bird watching and enjoying the fresh air on deck. Hattuta noted, “Everyone is maintaining a positive spirit, wearing masks inside the ship, and ensuring personal space while interacting with one another.” The presence of additional medical personnel, brought in before departing Cape Verde, has added a layer of reassurance for the remaining passengers.
Jake Rosmarin, another travel influencer on the MV Hondius, also shared updates on social media. On 7 May, he posted a cheerful message on Instagram, stating, “Still in good spirits and continuing en route to the Canary Islands.” His posts depicted a lively atmosphere as he enjoyed the sights and sounds of the ocean from the ship’s balcony.
In anticipation of their arrival in Spain, the country’s Ministry of Health has implemented strict quarantine measures for MV Hondius passengers, which has been a topic of concern and speculation. Upon disembarking, passengers will be required to undergo a thorough quarantine at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid. This process includes a PCR test upon arrival, followed by another test seven days later, along with twice-daily temperature checks to monitor for any symptoms.
The strict protocols aim to safeguard public health as the situation evolves. Though the prospect of quarantine may be daunting for some, it is a crucial step in preventing the spread of the hantavirus and addressing any potential risks associated with the recent outbreak.
As passengers prepare for their arrival in the Canary Islands, their focus seems to shift towards returning to a sense of normalcy whilst navigating the challenges posed by the virus. With ongoing medical support on the ship and comprehensive plans in place for disembarkation, the MV Hondius crew and passengers remain hopeful for a safe conclusion to their journey.
