A 29-year-old Australian woman is currently in a critical condition after suffering a medical emergency while on holiday in Bali, Indonesia. Luca Loveday, from Brisbane, had travelled to the popular tourist destination with a close friend, but her trip took a heartbreaking turn following a sudden collapse at a restaurant.

Reports indicate that Luca began shaking at the venue before falling to the ground, prompting immediate concern among her companions. Subsequently, she was admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) in a local hospital, where she is being treated for multiple severe health issues. These include several brain bleeds, a fractured skull, swelling of the brain, and air trapped in her cranial cavity. As a result of her condition, it has been deemed unsafe for her to be repatriated to Australia at this time.

Luca’s sister, Rikki Loveday, has been at her bedside, detailing the distressing circumstances her family is facing. “We have been by her side every day in the ICU,” Rikki shared. She reported that Luca is suffering from confusion and memory impairment, often struggling to recognise her surroundings or recall the events that led to her hospitalisation.
The situation has been described as a tragic deviation from what was supposed to be an enjoyable holiday. Rikki noted that Luca had been eagerly anticipating this break, having worked hard abroad and looking forward to exploring the beauty of Bali’s landscapes filled with waterfalls and pristine beaches. Unfortunately, just days into the trip, their plans turned sour as she experienced the medical crisis.
In light of this serious incident, Luca’s family quickly travelled to Bali to be by her side. Rikki cited a deep sense of disbelief amongst their loved ones. “This has come as a complete shock to everyone who knows and loves her,” a statement from a family member on a GoFundMe page expressed. The fundraising campaign was initiated to help offset the unexpected financial burden of medical and travel expenses, which have been described as “overwhelming”.
As of the latest update, the GoFundMe has successfully raised nearly AUD 26,000 (approximately USD 19,000). The funds will assist in covering both Luca’s medical care in Bali and the logistics of bringing her home when the time is right. The Australian Consulate-General in Denpasar confirmed that they are providing consular support, although they were unable to issue detailed comments regarding the case due to privacy regulations.
Rikki noted that once Luca is stable enough to make the journey back to Brisbane, she will likely require further medical assistance and rehabilitation. The uncertainty surrounding her recovery process and travel plans has only compounded the emotional strain experienced by the Loveday family.
“Seeing her like this has been incredibly hard for all of us,” Rikki stated. Reflecting on the ordeal, she shared that this period has been the most frightening and overwhelming experience the family has ever encountered, highlighting the emotional weight of the situation on her and the rest of their family.
As Luca remains in the ICU, her condition and recovery process will be closely monitored by medical staff, with hopes for improvement in the near future. For the Loveday family, there is a shared hope that Luca’s strength will shine through as she faces this darkest chapter, relying on the support of those around her to guide her back to health.
