In an extraordinary turn of events, Dixie Guesnard and Ryan Richard found themselves exchanging vows in a hospital shortly before the birth of their daughter. Guesnard was admitted to hospital due to concerning symptoms related to her pregnancy, priming the couple for a wedding celebration that was as memorable as it was unorthodox.

On April 30, while in the midst of preparations to marry at a local courthouse in Alabama, Guesnard received an urgent call from her doctor. She had been experiencing swelling in her feet and elevated blood pressure, both of which can signal serious complications such as preeclampsia. This revelation led to her immediate admission at USA Health Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, where medical staff insisted that she would remain until her baby was born, which was expected to take place the following day.

Unperturbed by the sudden shift in plans, Guesnard was determined to wed her fiancé before their child’s arrival. With the assistance of dedicated nurses and staff members, the couple arranged for an impromptu wedding within the hospital. The preparations for this unlikely ceremony began almost immediately, demonstrating the creativity and enthusiasm of hospital staff who were eager to support the couple on their special day.
The hospital team, led by Kensi Duncan, the labour and delivery manager, transformed the room into a delightful setting for a wedding. Decorating with white paper garlands and twinkling string lights, they managed to infuse a festive atmosphere into the otherwise sterile environment. In a remarkable show of resourcefulness, nurses sourced a dress large enough to accommodate Guesnard’s medical tubing, while also arranging for a bouquet. As a playful touch, the couple’s wedding bands were represented by ring pops, adding a light-hearted element to the occasion.
The wedding ceremony was officiated by Kim Crawford-Meeks, the hospital chaplain. With family members and hospital staff as witnesses, the intimate event lasted just ten minutes, highlighting the urgency of the couple’s circumstances. Following the exchange of vows, Guesnard was wheeled down the corridor amidst a cascade of confetti, ushering in not just a new chapter in her life but later that day, the arrival of their daughter.
Just eleven hours after the ceremony, at 10:01 p.m. on May 1, Guesnard delivered a healthy baby girl named Shelby Grace, who weighed 4 lbs., 14 oz. The couple now toasts to shared milestones, as their wedding anniversary and their daughter’s birthday now fall on the same day. Reflecting on these simultaneous celebrations, Guesnard jokingly remarked, “We better not forget that.”
Currently, the new parents are residing at the Ronald McDonald House nearby, offering them a supportive place to stay while their newborn receives care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This temporary accommodation is critical, as it allows them to be close to Shelby during this important early stage of her life.
Dixie Guesnard and Ryan Richard’s story is not just one of love and commitment but also a testament to resilience and community support in unexpected circumstances. As they embark on this new journey as a family, their heartwarming experience serves as a reminder of the joy that can be found even amidst life’s challenges.
