How a Social Media Trend Allegedly Led to a Vulnerable Man’s Fatal Beating by 5 Teens

Five teenagers in upstate New York have been charged with second-degree murder following the brutal beating of an unhoused man, which authorities allege was prompted by a disturbing social media trend. The tragic incident has sparked outrage in the community and raised significant questions about the motivations behind such acts of violence.

The assault occurred on the night of 27 April in Binghamton, where Peter J. Bennedum, aged 45, was attacked by the group of five juveniles aged between 13 and 15. Witnesses report that the attack was vicious, and Bennedum was left in critical condition, prompting immediate medical attention.

Initially, two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds were arrested that night and charged with attempted murder. Their identities have not been disclosed due to their juvenile status. Tragically, Bennedum succumbed to his injuries on 5 May after family members made the difficult decision to remove him from life support. An autopsy confirmed that his death was a homicide, leading to upgraded charges against the teenagers.

On 6 May, a fifth suspect, a 13-year-old boy, was apprehended in Whitney Point, New York, and is currently held at a juvenile detention facility in Syracuse. The other four suspects remain in custody at a juvenile detention centre in Broome County.

Among those mourning Bennedum is Patrick McCann, a friend from childhood, who described the harrowing situation surrounding his death. He recounted that Bennedum lay on the street for more than two hours before receiving help. By the time he arrived at the hospital, McCann stated that Bennedum was already brain dead, and efforts by emergency medical personnel to revive him were unsuccessful. McCann highlighted the logistical challenges surrounding Bennedum’s passing, noting the morgue was at capacity and funeral homes required payment upfront.

Integrating personal reflections with a poignant open letter published on local media, Traci Taylor expressed the disbelief that children had been accused of committing such a heinous act. She implored the community to remember Bennedum as a human being deserving of love and dignity, not just a victim of circumstance, reiterating that no one should be subjected to such violence.

A funeral for Peter Bennedum has been scheduled for 7 May in Newfield, New York. Members of the public are invited to pay their respects during this difficult time for the community.
