In a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Olivia Farrelly walked down the aisle in a wedding dress that had been worn by her mother more than six decades ago. The emotional ceremony took place at the Bellinter House Hotel in Ireland, where Olivia married her fiancé, Freddy Belliard.

The vintage wedding dress, a unique piece crafted by a neighbour of Olivia’s mother, Gerry, has withstood the test of time, originally worn by her mother when she tied the knot in 1964. Upon learning of their engagement, Olivia was inspired to wear the dress after browsing through old photographs with her father, Richard, during a visit.
“I knew my mum’s wedding dress was still in the house, so I asked Dad if I could wear it and he was delighted,” Farrelly revealed. This request initiated a process where the timeless garment was skilfully altered to fit Olivia’s dimensions, who noted that she is shorter than her mother.

The original gown, which consisted of a two-piece satin embossed design, was modified to reflect Olivia’s taste, incorporating a full tulle skirt underneath to provide a modern touch while retaining its vintage charm. “It was as perfect as the day she wore it, except for a small yellow stain at the very bottom, which was removed when I had the dress taken up to a mid-length,” she explained, showcasing her dedication to preserving the significance of the garment while making it uniquely hers.

Complementing the gown, Olivia donned a mid-length veil and elegant silk shoes, creating a look that exuded both nostalgia and contemporary flair. Her husband, Freddy, matched her style with a white blazer, black trousers, and a black bow tie, demonstrating a cohesive aesthetic for their special day.
While the dress served as a beautiful reminder of her mother, who passed away in December 2013, Olivia described wearing it as a bittersweet experience. “It felt amazing to wear the dress and for everyone to see me in it. To have the chance to wear it over 60 years after the original day was incredibly special,” she reflected.
The emotional resonances of the day were not lost on Olivia’s father, who found the experience of seeing his daughter in the dress profoundly touching. “It was so special for everyone, but especially my dad to see his daughter wearing it on her big day,” she remarked. Such moments evoked cherished memories for him from long ago, adding depth to the celebration.
The couple’s journey leading to this significant day has been relatively recent; they fell in love just last year. However, Olivia’s choice to wear her mother’s dress signifies a deep connection to her family’s past and the values her mother instilled in her.
This meaningful event showcases not just the beauty of the wedding dress but the enduring legacy of love that spans generations. It highlights how families can honour their traditions while creating new memories, connecting the past to the present in the most heartfelt of ways.
