Dolly Parton has shared a heartfelt reflection on her first year without her husband, Carl Dean, who passed away in March 2025. The country music star, aged 80, took to social media on May 4 to provide fans with an update on her health and the emotional challenges she has faced following her husband’s death.

In an Instagram Reel posted on Monday, Parton expressed her enduring love for Dean, saying, “I will always love him, and I will always miss him.” She acknowledged the difficulty of navigating significant dates, including anniversaries and holidays that served as poignant reminders of her loss. “Going through a year of firsts was hard for me,” she shared, reflecting on the weight of their wedding anniversary and the date of his passing.
Parton appreciated the outpouring of support from her fans during this challenging period, noting that their kindness has played a crucial role in her healing process. “You have been a big part of my healing,” she told her followers. “My house looked like the botanical gardens with all the flowers, and my den looked like the post office with all the cards and letters.”
As she reminisced about her bond with Dean, Parton recounted a humorous exchange that showcased their dynamic relationship. “I remember years ago complaining about something hurting, and Carl said, ‘Now, honey, you know you’ve got to remember you’re not getting any younger.’ I replied, ‘As long as there are plastic surgeons in this world, I’m not getting any older,’” she recalled with a chuckle.
While the singer acknowledged the superficial benefits of cosmetic surgery, she emphasised the seriousness of her ongoing health issues. Parton previously revealed in October that she had postponed her Las Vegas residency due to an unspecified illness, noting complications with kidney stones just a month earlier. Despite these challenges, she conveyed her optimism regarding her treatment, stating she is “responding really well to meds and treatments” and is gradually improving.
However, Parton also candidly admitted that returning to the stage at performance level will take time due to ongoing dizziness. She announced that her anticipated Las Vegas residency, originally slated for September 2026, has been cancelled, a disappointment for both the singer and her fans. Notably, her “Dolly: Live in Vegas” show at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace was also marked as cancelled on her Ticketmaster page.
Despite her health concerns, Parton reassured her fans that she is receiving excellent medical care and that her doctors have confirmed that her conditions are treatable. This positive outlook illustrates her resilience in the face of adversity.
Parton and Dean enjoyed a tumultuous but loving relationship throughout their nearly six decades of marriage, having first met at a Nashville laundromat when Parton was only 18. She fondly remembered how Dean seemed genuinely interested in her, noting, “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me).”
The couple married in 1966, but Dean maintained a low profile throughout Parton’s meteoric rise in the music industry, rarely appearing at public events alongside her. In a 2015 interview with Parade, Parton celebrated her husband’s contrasting personality, stating, “I married a really good man, a guy that’s completely different from me. He’s not in show business.”
When Dean passed away, Parton took to Instagram to express her grief, saying, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” and acknowledging that “words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.” She also thanked her fans for their prayers and sympathy during that difficult time.
As Parton continues to navigate her health challenges and the loss of her husband, she remains a beloved figure, inspiring her audience with her warmth and determination. The outpouring of love and support from fans around the world reflects the deep connection she has cultivated throughout her storied career, one which she will undoubtedly continue to share for years to come.
