Authorities state that Weaver entered the bank at approximately 1:57 p.m. wearing a mask and immediately opened fire on bank employees. The victims have been identified as Brian Switzer, a 42-year-old husband and father of three, and 35-year-old Breanna Edwards. Reports indicate that after shooting his victims, Weaver rummaged through the bank’s drawers before fleeing the scene.

Details surrounding the subsequent events highlight the suspect’s apparent nonchalance. Later on the same day, Weaver reportedly shared a meme on social media depicting a masked figure with a large sum of cash. The phrase “I pledge allegiance to da bag” accompanied the image, which raised eyebrows among law enforcement. This post was made shortly after the horrific crime and adds an unsettling layer to the unfolding story.
The vehicle linked to Weaver, a silver BMW, was identified on the interstate that evening. This led to a high-speed pursuit involving federal, state, and local law enforcement. The chase reached speeds of around 210 km/h (approximately 130 mph) before Weaver lost control and crashed. After abandoning his vehicle, he fled on foot but was apprehended by authorities around 3:00 a.m. the following day.
Weaver now faces multiple federal charges, including armed bank robbery, the use of a firearm in a violent crime, and two counts of causing death with a firearm. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche remarked on the incident, expressing condolences to the families affected and commending law enforcement for their swift actions that resulted in Weaver’s capture. “Our hearts go out to them,” he stated following the arrests.
Moreover, the investigation into this tragic event is being conducted by a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The community remains on edge as the investigation unfolds, with many questions still surrounding Weaver’s motive and the circumstances that led to this horrifying event.
GoFundMe campaigns have been launched to support the families of the victims, with tributes pouring in for both Switzer and Edwards. Friends and family remember Switzer as a devoted father and husband, depicting a picture of a man who was the primary supporter of his family. The fundraiser created in his honour highlights the devastating impact of the shooting, with hopes that financial support will alleviate some of the stress on his grieving family.
Edwards is also being mourned by friends and family, who describe her as a “beautiful soul.” The GoFundMe supporting her family expresses the profound loss felt by those who knew her, emphasising the community’s devastation over her untimely death.
Weaver is scheduled to appear in court on 4 May, where he will face the charges against him. As the facts of the case continue to emerge, Berea residents are left grappling with the loss of two lives and the broader implications of gun violence in their community. The narrative surrounding this tragic event serves as a painful reminder of the necessity for ongoing conversations about safety, law enforcement, and mental health in society.
