In a remarkable but somber development for conservation efforts, scientists have successfully created a northern white rhino embryo, marking a hopeful stride towards revitalising a subspecies on the brink of extinction. With only two surviving members of this category, both female, natural reproduction is impossible. The recent achievement by the BioRescue Consortium underscores both the potential and challenges faced in the race against time for this imperilled animal.

The embryo was developed from eggs harvested from one of the remaining females, known as Fatu. Fertilised in a laboratory setting using frozen sperm from deceased northern white rhino males, this embryo represents a critical step in a complex and unprecedented restoration initiative. The planned next phase involves implanting the embryo into the womb of a southern white rhino, which is closely related to its northern counterpart.

This breakthrough brings the total number of viable northern white rhino embryos to 39, significantly bolstering conservationists’ hopes for the subspecies’ future. The process of in vitro fertilisation in rhinos poses substantial technical difficulties, marking it as an undertaking that has, until now, rarely been attempted in the realm of wildlife conservation.
In previous attempts to prevent the subspecies from fading into oblivion, the BioRescue Consortium, in collaboration with multiple wildlife organisations, had conducted three northern white rhino embryo transfers into southern white rhino surrogates. Regrettably, each of these efforts failed to result in sustainable pregnancies. As a response, two additional southern white rhino females are now being prepared to participate in future embryo transfer attempts.
The consortium remains optimistic despite the numerous obstacles encountered. Their commitment to preserving the northern white rhino is reflective of a broader trend within conservation, where innovative technologies and rigorous scientific methodologies are increasingly applied. The extinction risk faced by the northern white rhino escalated significantly following the death of Sudan, the last known male of the subspecies, in March 2018. This animal lived at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and had been closely monitored and protected from poaching threats. At the age of 45, he succumbed to age-related health issues, which was compounded by a series of infections.
The plight of the northern white rhino reflects wider challenges facing various species around the world, driven largely by human activity such as poaching and habitat destruction. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has classified white rhinos as “near threatened,” acknowledging the immense impact of these factors on their populations.
Currently, the northern white rhino’s future rests on the shoulders of dedicated scientists and conservationists whose resolve is tested daily. The work conducted by the BioRescue Consortium, which involves a mix of academic, governmental and conservation groups, epitomises a collaborative approach to tackle one of the most pressing issues in modern wildlife preservation.

While the creation of viable embryos is a significant step forward, the ultimate test will be successful pregnancies and the birth of new northern white rhinos.
