McDonald’s has unveiled its latest strategy to attract customers with a new line of specialty beverages, set to make their debut on 6 May. This ambitious move aims to position the fast food giant as the go-to destination for refreshing drinks, capitalising on the popularity of their existing favourite offerings, such as the spicy Sprite and Hi-C Orange Lavaburst.

In a recent announcement, the company has confirmed that six innovative drinks will be added to its permanent menu. This new selection includes three refreshers and three crafted sodas, designed to bring vibrant flavours and new textures to consumers. The crafted sodas feature distinct products like the Dirty Dr Pepper, Orange Dream, and Sprite Berry Blast, all topped with an indulgent foam. The refreshers consist of the Strawberry Watermelon Refresher, Mango Pineapple Refresher, and Blackberry Passion Fruit Refresher.
During a tasting event at McDonald’s headquarters in Chicago, attendees had the opportunity to sample these newly developed drinks and experience their striking colours and unique flavour profiles. Among the beverages offered, the Orange Dream stood out, reminiscent of a Creamsicle with its blend of Hi-C Orange Lavaburst and a hint of vanilla, finished with whipped foam. However, the Mango Pineapple Refresher, featuring a stunning orange hue complemented by tiny red boba balls, was the overwhelming favourite of the event. This drink is not only visually appealing but also delivers a light, fruity burst of flavour.

The Strawberry Watermelon Refresher, enhanced with fresh strawberry slices, and the visually arresting Blackberry Passion Fruit, which contains chewy blackberry morsels, were other notable highlights from the tasting. The refreshers, while caffeine-infused, were confirmed to contain less caffeine than a medium-sized Coke, allowing for a pleasant energy boost without overindulgence.
Those who have developed a taste for McDonald’s spicy Sprite will be particularly drawn to the Sprite Berry Blast, described as having a strong flavour that pairs well with the foam topping. Meanwhile, Dirty Dr Pepper is poised to become a staple for fans of the classic soda, presenting a unique vanilla twist that distinguishes it from traditional offerings.
One innovative aspect of this new drink experience is the introduction of custom sip lids designed specifically for these beverages. Aside from the Mango Pineapple Refresher—which is best enjoyed through a straw allowing the boba balls to be sipped—these lids provide a novel way to savour the drinks. This design encourages consumers to engage more fully with their beverages, transforming the act of drinking into a richer sensory experience.

McDonald’s has invested nearly a year in the development of these beverages, refining various prototypes to arrive at the final formulas and designs. The company is captivated by its fans’ passion for drinks, recognising that for many, beverages are not merely an accompaniment to food but a significant part of the dining experience.
Alyssa Buetikofer, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer at McDonald’s USA, commented on the new launches, stating that the firm expects their latest specialty drinks to entice customers in a new way. “Our fans have an obsession with beverages — to them, drinks are more than just drinks. And soon, our beverages won’t just be a reason you come to McDonald’s; they’ll be the reason,” she remarked, highlighting the brand’s commitment to serving drinks crafted with bold flavours and quality ingredients.
With these six new refreshments and crafted sodas hitting menus throughout the country this May, McDonald’s aims to elevate the fast food beverage experience and redefine its identity in this competitive market. As the interest in unique and flavorful drinks continues to surge in dining establishments across the UK and the US, McDonald’s is positioning itself at the forefront of the trend, eager to satisfy customers looking for more than traditional sodas.
