Hannah Hearn, a resilient mother from Massachusetts, is embracing the joys of parenthood despite facing a life-altering cancer diagnosis. Following a troubling experience with her eyesight, Hearn discovered she had choroidal melanoma while pregnant, a journey that has deeply shaped her life and perspective.

At 18 weeks into her pregnancy, Hearn began to notice a significant decrease in her peripheral vision in her right eye. Initially dismissing it as an ocular migraine, she sought medical advice after encouragement from her sister, a nurse. The visit to the eye doctor quickly changed the course of her life—she was diagnosed with a 7-millimetre tumour in her eye, a condition she had never anticipated.
“This diagnosis completely caught us off guard,” Hearn reflected. The confirmation of choroidal melanoma, a rare form of ocular cancer, marked the beginning of a challenging chapter in her life. In December 2025, while 20 weeks pregnant, she commenced treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, undergoing plaque brachytherapy, a form of radiation therapy specifically targeting eye cancers. During this process, she was required to isolate for a week due to the nature of the treatment.
Tragically, Hearn learned that her tumour had an aggressive type, known as class 2 PRAME-positive, which presents a daunting 60% to 70% risk of metastasis within the two years following diagnosis. Nevertheless, she remained hopeful as she welcomed her daughter, Austen Joy, into the world in April 2026, a moment that ignited a sense of gratitude in her.
“I cherished every single moment of postpartum life,” Hearn recalled, reflecting on the blissful three and a half months spent with her newborn. Marked by joy yet overshadowed by her diagnosis, her appreciation for motherhood deepened as she navigated early parenthood. Hearn revealed that the impending uncertainty during her pregnancy, when there were fears of potential metastasis, amplified her gratitude for the time spent with her daughter.
Hearn and her husband embraced this new family dynamic, referring playfully to it as a “maternity leave from cancer” and enjoying the precious moments together. Post-birth, they frequently spent time outdoors as their daughter was born in the spring, allowing them to bask in the beauty of Massachusetts while creating cherished memories.
However, their world was rocked once more in July 2026 when follow-up scans revealed new tumours on Hearn’s liver. This development confirmed that her cancer had progressed to stage 4, prompting her to begin a rigorous treatment regimen in August. Hearn is currently undergoing a combination of dual immunotherapy and a liver-directed chemotherapy known as PHP, which she describes as intense yet promising.
“I’m feeling really hopeful about it,” Hearn stated, expressing encouragement from the results thus far. “I just completed my second round and am preparing for the next round of immunotherapy.” The regimen requires her to attend treatment sessions every six weeks, maintaining a delicate balance with her new responsibilities as a mother.
As she navigates the complexities of early motherhood alongside her treatment plan, Hearn acknowledges the difficulties posed by the intense nature of her therapies. Yet, she emphasises the importance of having a reliable support system, which includes her family, her husband’s relatives, and a devoted oncology team at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“This experience has reinforced my acceptance of my role as a mother,” Hearn explained. “I’m surrounded by wonderful people who ensure my daughter feels loved, enabling me to concentrate on my health.” Recognising that her journey is a shared one, she is grateful for the assistance that allows her to focus on recovery while still nurturing her daughter.
Recently, Hearn and her family relocated to New England to be closer to their loved ones, which has provided further emotional relief. During her recent rounds of treatment, her mother has been present to offer support, a situation she describes as “amazing.”
“The time we’ve spent exploring Massachusetts has been beautiful,” Hearn shared. “Every day is treated as an opportunity for joy, as I firmly believe that maintaining a high quality of life is critical to my cancer treatment journey. I am committed to enjoying life and making the most of the moments I have with my family.”
Through her trials, Hannah Hearn remains a symbol of hope and strength, proving that while adversities may loom large, the beauty of life and love can still shine brightly.
