Fundraiser Set Up for Families of Fla. Doctoral Students to Help with Funeral Costs, Returning Remains

A fundraiser has been established to aid the families of two doctoral students, Nahida Bristy and Zamil Limon, from the University of South Florida, whose disappearances have sparked a murder investigation in Florida. The case took a tragic turn last week when Limon’s body was discovered on a bridge in Tampa.

Limon’s body was recovered on 24 April, approximately one week after the students were reported missing. In a grim development, additional human remains were also found at the location and are currently awaiting identification by the coroner’s office. Meanwhile, efforts to locate Bristy have met with a discouraging announcement from Hillsborough County officials, who indicated that they have no evidence suggesting she is still alive.

Kai Rains, Limon’s graduate advisor, initiated the GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support for the families as they navigate the legal proceedings and costs associated with the funerals. Both families have expressed immense grief, reflecting on the loss of two talented and promising young individuals, who were also their beloved children.

In a statement shared via the fundraiser, Rains noted, “We have all lost two gifted and generous young people, and their families have lost their beloved son and daughter.” The GoFundMe aims to collect funds to cover expenses for the return of the remains and personal belongings to their families in Bangladesh, as well as to alleviate the financial burden of lost income and funeral arrangements.

The fundraiser garnered remarkable support, raising over £5,000 within just three hours of launching. This reflects the community’s commitment to supporting the families during such a devastating time. In a joint statement from the victims’ families, it was revealed that they were financially dependent on Bristy and Limon, underscoring the urgent need for assistance.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has revealed concerning details of the investigation, stating in an affidavit that they have found no signs to suggest Bristy’s survival. This news has left many in the community devastated, as hope dwindles in the search for her.

Compounding the tragedy, Limon’s roommate, Hisham Abugharbieh, has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder. Court records, however, do not disclose any plea information as of yet. The public defender representing him declined to comment when approached by media.

As the investigation unfolds, many are calling for justice for the young students who were full of potential and promise. Their friends and peers are now rallying around the families, emphasising the need for community support in light of this tragedy. The outpouring of donations and messages of support illustrates the impact both students had on those around them and the desperate desire to assist their families in this heartbreaking time.
