Fla. Doctoral Students’ Families Speak Out After Murder Charges: ‘Why Was No Strong Action Taken?’

The families of two University of South Florida doctoral students have called for a thorough investigation into the Avalon Heights housing complex, where both students were residents before their disturbing disappearance. The joint statement comes in the wake of an arrest made in connection with the case involving 27-year-olds Nahida Sultana Bristy and Zamil Ahamed Limon.

Both students were reported missing on April 17 in Tampa, Florida. Tragically, Limon’s body was discovered on the Howard Frankland Bridge just a week later. His roommate, Hisham Abugharbieh, has been charged with two counts of murder linked to the case, compounding the grief and concern felt by the families involved.

In their statement released on April 26, the families expressed their distress over the circumstances surrounding Avalon Heights, where Limon and the suspect were assigned as roommates. They raised significant concerns regarding the housing facility’s protocols, specifically questioning the assignment of roommates without comprehensive background checks and whether residents were informed about any relevant safety issues.

“We believe it is crucial to investigate why a roommate was assigned without proper background checks or without informing the residents of any relevant concerns,” the families articulated in their memo. They also demanded clarification as to why Avalon Heights appeared to lack sufficient security measures, particularly in light of complaints reportedly filed about Abugharbieh’s conduct.

Limon’s brother disclosed to a local news outlet that he had previously raised concerns with the management of Avalon Heights regarding Abugharbieh’s behaviour. Despite these complaints, the family questioned why significant action was not taken to address the issues.

In response to the alarming situation, the University of South Florida has removed Avalon Heights from its off-campus housing options. Although the university does not own the apartments, they stated their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students in all living arrangements. The university is reportedly cooperating with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue, and they are encouraging a review of the safety conditions at the housing facility.

The families also emphasised the financial reliance they had on Bristy and Limon, asking for information regarding their assets, salaries, and bank balances. In addition, they requested the return of the students’ personal belongings, including important items such as laptops, clothing, and relevant documents, to be sent back to their homeland of Bangladesh in their original condition.

Moreover, the families have called upon the University of South Florida to establish a memorial in honour of both students. They expressed the hope that such a memorial could serve to prevent future tragedies of this nature as a means of fostering awareness and improving safety measures within university housing.

As the investigation progresses, there remains a poignant shadow over the case surrounding Bristy’s continued absence. Recent reports indicate that the evidence collected at Abugharbieh’s residence has yielded alarming findings. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced on April 26 that they had discovered further human remains near the location where Limon’s body was recovered. These remains have been sent to the Pinellas County coroner’s office for identification, leading to further anxiety about the outcomes of the ongoing investigations.
