According to a statement released by the Independence Police Department, the accident involved a 2017 Cadillac XT5 that was reversing out of a parking space when it collided with the young boy. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Aziel succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident.

Investigating officers have stated that the circumstances of the crash are still being examined. Initially, it was noted that Aziel had veered from the side of the pavement and into the path of the vehicle. While officials began their investigation, the community mourned the loss of a child known for his cheerful spirit.

His mother, Cierra McKendrick, expressed her devastation over the loss, recalling her son’s joy for playing outside. “All he wanted to do was play, he loved his scooter,” she told Fox2Now, adding that a memorial featuring his scooter has been set up outside their apartment in his honour.
At the time of the accident, McKendrick reported that she had left Aziel with his grandmother and two siblings while she went to the shop. She had just returned to the entrance of the apartment complex when she was informed of the tragic event. Witnesses stated that Aziel was riding on his sister’s scooter when he unexpectedly entered the parking area.
The driver of the Cadillac reportedly attempted to avoid the collision. “The driver saw him heading towards the street as she was pulling out, and my mother tried to intervene but failed to reach him in time,” McKendrick recounted. The moments leading up to the incident were chaotic, with a neighbour, Deante Melson, trying to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.
Melson highlighted the tension during the ordeal, saying that the driver of the vehicle was shifting blame towards Aziel’s grandmother while still at the scene. Such an accident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers that exist in residential areas where children play.
In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, a GoFundMe page was established to support Aziel’s family. As of the latest updates, the campaign has raised over £1,800 towards a £2,200 goal. Community members have rallied to offer their condolences and assistance, underscoring the impact that such a loss has on a small neighbourhood.
As the investigation continues, the Independence community reflects on the precious life lost far too soon. Parents are urged to remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of children, particularly in areas where vehicles and play areas intersect. The tragedy has not only affected the immediate family but has resonated throughout the community, highlighting the need for awareness regarding child safety in residential areas.
