Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots, has taken a step back from team activities amidst a media scandal involving photographs of him with former NFL reporter Dianna Russini. This decision has led to Vrabel seeking counselling during one of the most critical periods of the NFL calendar—the 2026 Draft.

According to Eliot Wolf, the team’s executive vice president of player personnel, Vrabel was not in communication with team officials during the latter stages of the draft. In a statement made this past weekend, Wolf clarified that both he and Vrabel had reached a mutual understanding that the head coach’s “time away really needs to be time away.”
On April 23, Vrabel announced via ESPN that he would be stepping back from his coaching responsibilities on the third day of the NFL Draft. This decision was made following the emergence of several images showing him in a seemingly intimate setting with Russini. The photographs first surfaced earlier in the month, prompting speculation regarding the nature of their relationship.
Despite initial reports suggesting that Vrabel was in “constant contact” with the Patriots throughout the drafting process, Wolf confirmed to MassLive that there was little to no direct communication between them as Vrabel prioritised his mental well-being.
Wolf mentioned that he had only reached out to Vrabel with a simple text to inquire about his well-being, but the conversation was minimal and did not delve into team matters. According to Wolf, Vrabel shared “words of encouragement” after the Patriots successfully selected players Gabe Jacas and Eli Raridon on April 25. “He knows our process,” Wolf noted, emphasising Vrabel’s familiarity with the team’s strategies and his preferences for player selection.
Even in Vrabel’s absence, Wolf expressed confidence in the draft process, stating that it had been “a really good process all weekend.” He praised the efforts of the entire organisation, reflecting on the collaborative nature of the draft and how it aligns with the team’s goals.
Amidst the scandal, Vrabel had previously dismissed rumours of a romantic involvement with Russini as “laughable.” However, he later held a press conference prior to the start of the draft where he took responsibility for his actions, acknowledging the impact on his family, the football team, and its supporters.
“My priorities are my family and this football, and in that order,” he stated. He emphasised the importance of finding a balance in his life, asserting that his family needed him during this challenging period.
In a parallel development, Russini resigned from her role as an NFL insider at The Athletic on April 14, just days following the release of the controversial photographs.
