A teacher at a private school in South Florida has been arrested on charges relating to the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material. Evan Michael Sands, an employee at The Randazzo School in Coconut Creek, reportedly engaged in inappropriate conversations with minors through popular online platforms such as Discord and Roblox.

According to a complaint lodged by authorities, Sands, aged 34, was apprehended following a tip-off to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in December. This alert led to an investigation by the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. It is alleged that Sands used these platforms to solicit sexually explicit photographs and videos from children, some of whom were reportedly as young as 6 years old.

The complaint highlights the discovery of two videos depicting sexual abuse of minors, shared through Discord, that were traced back to Sands. Federal agents, after securing search warrants, found that the teacher had participated in “numerous conversations” with children aged under 18, and in particular, with children under 12. Under the username “astraldrag0n#0,” Sands allegedly encouraged these minors to send him explicit images of themselves.
In addition to the explicit messages, authorities claimed Sands also sent minors videos of himself engaging in lewd acts while identifying himself by name, including details about his address and place of employment. These conversations raised alarm amongst investigators, prompting them to secure a warrant for a search of Sands’ residence.
Prior to the execution of the search warrant, agents reportedly observed Sands leaving his home. Upon detaining him and searching his mobile phone, they allegedly discovered additional videos that portrayed sexual abuse of children as young as 12. During questioning, Sands purportedly admitted to using Discord to send sexually explicit content since 2021. He allegedly incentivised children to engage in these harmful interactions by offering them “Robux,” a virtual currency used in the online game Roblox.
Sands now faces serious legal repercussions, including two federal charges related to the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material and one charge for enticing a minor to engage in illicit sexual behaviour. Following his arrest, The Randazzo School’s administrators issued a statement expressing their “shock and sadness” at the incident. They affirmed that Sands would not be returning to work and emphasised their full cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
The school’s statement further reassured the community, indicating that, based on information from the U.S. Marshals, there is no evidence suggesting that any of their students were affected by Sands’ alleged actions. They underscored the priority of student safety and well-being, amidst the serious allegations lodged against one of their staff members.
In light of these developments, various organisations have reiterated the importance of vigilance and support for potential victims of sexual abuse. If anyone suspects or has experienced such abuse, they are encouraged to reach out for help. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline offers 24/7 support in over 170 languages, ensuring support for those in crisis.
As investigations continue, the case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers present in online interactions, particularly for children. Parents and guardians are urged to remain alert and proactive in monitoring their children’s online activities to ensure their safety.
