Music icon Barry Manilow has been spotted in public for the first time since undergoing a lobectomy to treat lung cancer. The 82-year-old singer was photographed smiling in New York City on April 24, four months after his cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery.

In December 2025, Manilow announced his health struggles to his fans through a heartfelt post on social media. He shared that a “cancerous spot” had been discovered in his left lung during an MRI, following a prolonged bout of bronchitis that left him unwell. At the time, his fans rallied around him as he revealed he would need to put his farewell tour on hold to focus on recovery.

In his Facebook announcement on December 22, he expressed gratitude for the early detection of the cancer, highlighting the importance of his diligent medical care. “It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news,” he stated, detailing his decision to undergo surgery.
A month later, in early January, Manilow provided his fans with an upbeat update, posting a cheerful selfie from his hospital bed. He declared himself “Better Today!” suggesting that he was on the mend. However, the following month brought a more sobering assessment from his doctor, as he revealed he would need to postpone more tour dates due to his recovery process.
In March, Manilow shared his reflections on his health journey in an exclusive interview. Speaking candidly about the fragility of life, he remarked on how abruptly his perspective had shifted following the diagnosis of lung cancer. “You just don’t even think about [how fragile life is],” he said.
The singer elaborated on the significance of the early detection of the cancerous spot, pondering how long it had been present. “It could have been years. If it had gone any further, then I would be up s—’s creek,” he added, emphasising how fortunate he felt that it had not spread.
Manilow spent a week in intensive care following his lobectomy, although he expressed relief over not retaining much memory from that period. Emphasising his gratitude, he stated, “I’m one of the lucky ones; I don’t have to have chemo, radiation and all that stuff.”
The health scare offered the music legend a moment for introspection. As he adjusted to life post-surgery, Manilow pondered deeply about his achievements and relationships. “It has really, really made me take stock of my life,” he confessed. “This made me stop and think about: Have I done what I wanted to do, and have I made people happy? Have I been a good friend?”
Ultimately, Manilow answered those questions with positivity, stating, “The answers are yes. And as a matter of fact, there are more yeses than I ever thought.”
Looking ahead, the celebrated artist is preparing for the release of his 33rd studio album, titled *What a Time*, which is set to launch on June 5, 2026. As he continues to recuperate and reflect on his legacy, fans are eagerly awaiting his return to the stage and the new music he has to share.
