Matthew, 47, was reported missing from the 50-foot oyster boat, the F/V Bon Secour, on 9 April while working near Money Island, New Jersey. His body was found on 21 April by commercial fishermen about a mile offshore from Bowers Beach, Delaware. This tragic incident has left those who knew him in shock and grief.

Melanie Parent, who shares a daughter with Oliver, expressed her devastation over his sudden disappearance and subsequent death. She described Oliver as being in a “very good place in life” and noted that he was looking forward to enjoying each day. “His loss will be felt by many for a long time,” Parent stated, highlighting the significant impact he had on the lives of those around him.
Oliver was renowned for his expertise in the oyster fishing industry, an area he devoted many years to, and had a profound love for the water. According to Parent, he was a strong swimmer, knowledgeable about the sea, and had a calm demeanour that would shine through whenever he felt at ease. “He was more on the quiet side, but when he was comfortable, he was full of jokes and had a great laugh and smile,” she recalled fondly.
The fateful day began when the crew of the Bon Secour noticed Oliver was missing as they were returning to shore. At the time of the incident, the vessel was about two miles offshore when they realised he was no longer on board. Crewmates quickly alerted the Coast Guard, which initiated a search mission to locate him.
The Coast Guard conducted a series of ten search operations covering a vast area of 77 square nautical miles in an attempt to find Oliver. Tragically, despite their efforts, they were unable to locate him, and the search was eventually suspended, leaving his family devastated and hoping for a miracle.
Days later, the search took a tragic turn when Oliver’s lifeless body was discovered by commercial watermen. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and subsequent death have prompted an investigation by authorities.
Oliver’s body has been transferred to the Office of Forensic Science to determine the cause of death. An inquiry into the events leading up to his disappearance is ongoing, as family and friends await answers to their many questions.
As Oliver’s loved ones come to terms with the loss, the community remembers him as a skilled oysterman and dedicated family man. His presence will certainly be missed, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him. As Parent reflects on their shared moments, she cannot help but feel the weight of their shared journey together, emphasising that they never imagined they would experience such a tragedy.
As investigations proceed, the hope remains that they may provide clarity and understanding for his family during this difficult time, while also honouring the legacy of a man who meant so much to so many.
