The song, which showcases the band’s characteristic upbeat style, aims to inspire listeners to embrace the concept of love in the modern world. Frontman Simon Le Bon described the track as “disco for the 2020s,” emphasising its celebratory spirit and feel-good energy. He stated, “It’s about freedom; it’s about loving the modern world instead of hating it, and that is something we need right now. Be free! Be free to love!”
This latest collaboration marks a reunion between Duran Duran and Rodgers, who first worked together in the early 1980s on a remix of the band’s hit “The Reflex.” Both artists have continually evolved over the years, and their new project reflects a shared vision of positivity and connection despite the tumultuous events occurring worldwide.

In addition to musical contributions, Nile Rodgers appears in the music video, which also features British television personality Clara Amfo. Amfo plays the role of host, introducing the band’s performance in a showcase that embodies the essence of disco fervour. The video was directed by Jonas Åkerlund and produced in collaboration with Italian perfumer Xerjoff, with whom Duran Duran created their fragrance, NeoRio.
Rodgers shared his sentiments regarding the new release, articulating a deep bond with Duran Duran and their music. He stated, “True love is free and unconditional. My love for Duran Duran, and what our music together has always been about, is the love we share for our song’s deepest meanings.” His words highlight a collective understanding that music serves as a sanctuary for creativity and positivity, despite the chaos that may surround it.

Keyboardist Nick Rhodes also praised the collaboration, aligning it with a belief shared by the band: that music acts as a transformative force that can bring positive energy to the world. He remarked on the electric atmosphere created when they perform with Rodgers, stating, “Every time we plug in and play with Nile, the electricity he generates could light up a whole city.” Rhodes further articulated the message behind “Free to Love,” describing it as an anthem for freedom and hope, which he believes is essential in today’s society.
The band, consisting of Rhodes, Le Bon, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor, released their most recent album, Danse Macabre, in 2023. Following the release of “Free to Love,” Duran Duran is set to perform on the popular television show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on April 29, with anticipation building for their live performance.
In addition to their television appearance, Duran Duran will participate in the BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach, California, on May 1, before heading to Las Vegas for a four-date residency at the Fontainebleau, concluding on May 9.
With “Free to Love,” Duran Duran continues to resonate with fans old and new, adapting their sound while maintaining the spirit of creativity and emotional expression that has defined their career for decades. This collaboration with Nile Rodgers not only reflects their commitment to musical innovation but also serves as a reminder of the universal power of love and the freedom to express it.
