Reese Witherspoon has taken to social media to address the criticism she faced after advocating for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) among women. In an Instagram video shared on April 16, the Oscar-winning actress encouraged her followers to integrate AI tools into their everyday lives, spurring a significant reaction from the public.
In her initial post, Witherspoon expressed her enthusiasm for AI, stating, “The AI revolution has begun, and I need to learn as much as I possibly can about AI and share it with all of you.” As a firm believer in the potential benefits of AI, she encouraged women to become familiar with the technology, noting the role it plays across various sectors of business.
However, the post did not sit well with everyone. Following backlash, Witherspoon addressed the issue in her Instagram Stories on April 20. “Well, I guess my AI post got people talking,” she remarked in a selfie shared with her followers. Clarifying her intentions, she asserted, “No one is paying me to talk about this. I’m just a curious human.”
Witherspoon, who has children with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe and ex-partner Jim Toth, highlighted her role as a parent in relation to technology. “My children are learning about AI tools,” she said, underscoring her personal connection to the technology discussion.
While championing the importance of AI education, Witherspoon also acknowledged the valid concerns surrounding the technology. “I’m aware of the impact this could have on jobs across so many industries. Witherspoon concluded her remarks by reiterating her commitment to education about the evolving technology. “I care deeply about local communities,” she stated. “If you want to learn with me, great, let’s do this! If you don’t, that’s okay too.”
Her sentiments on AI education mirrored her earlier comments from the April 16 video, where she emphasised the necessity of understanding technology to keep up with its rapid advancement. “The thing I’ve learned about technology is if you don’t get a little bit of understanding from the very beginning, it just speeds past you,” said Witherspoon.

She pointed out that women are three times more likely to work in jobs subject to AI automation, yet their engagement with AI is 25% lower than that of men.

In a September interview with Glamour, she discussed the future of filmmaking, stressing that it is crucial for women to be involved in the AI landscape. “And you can be sad and lament it all you want, but the change is here,” she said. “It might diminish, but it’s always going to be the highest importance in art and in expression of self.”
