Jennifer Fessler, known for her appearance on Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” and as a podcast host, has publicly opened up about her extensive journey with breast-related cosmetic surgeries. Recently, she underwent her fifth procedure in a bid for that long-sought-after satisfaction with her breast appearance.

The 57-year-old reality TV personality revealed to PEOPLE that her struggle with body image began in her youth. Growing up, she felt deep embarrassment regarding her tubular breasts, a condition characterised by a more elongated shape rather than the traditionally rounded form. As defined by the Cleveland Clinic, although tubular breasts can sometimes come with downward-pointing nipples, the condition itself is not medically concerning. However, for Fessler, the aesthetics of her breasts became a significant source of self-consciousness.
Her first surgical attempt at transformation was undertaken in her mid-twenties, motivated by a desire to correct the perceived flaws she had long endured. Unfortunately, the outcome was not what she hoped for; a doctor persuaded her to opt for implants instead of a lift, leaving her with breasts that were not only larger but still unsatisfactory in addressing her original concerns. This led to her second surgery, where she again sought a lift but was left dissatisfied with the results. Fessler vividly described the appearance of her areolas and nipples as looking like “somebody had chewed up bubble gum” and stuck it on her breasts.
After a lengthy hiatus of nearly ten years, during which she welcomed two children, Fessler pursued what is colloquially termed a ‘mummy makeover.’ This comprehensive procedure included a tummy tuck and another breast augmentation. While she noted some improvement in her appearance and a slight boost to her confidence, Fessler still found herself yearning for the ideal breast shape she had envisioned.
Some years later, seeking to simplify her situation, she opted to remove her implants. However, this decision led to unforeseen complications, including a loss of the supportive tissue under one of her breasts. The result compromised her ability to wear a bra without it slipping, contributing to her ongoing distress about her breast shape.
It was at this point that she turned to Dr Michael Stein, a New York City-based plastic surgeon who is well-regarded for his expertise in breast revisions. His analysis revealed that the previous implant removal had indeed affected the structural integrity of her breast tissue, leading to the complications Fessler had been experiencing.
To rectify these issues, Dr Stein performed a reconstruction of the breast folds, coupled with a careful augmentation. The innovative use of an “internal bra” was also employed in her surgery. This technique utilises absorbable suture material to create support beneath the implant, thereby assisting in maintaining the necessary shape during the healing process. The hope is that once this material is absorbed, scar tissue will provide lasting support to the newly revised breasts.
Despite her previous experiences, Fessler approached her latest consultation with a newfound perspective. Rather than focusing solely on acquiring larger implants, her primary aim was to achieve happiness with the aesthetic appearance of her breasts. This collaboration with Dr Stein resulted in a decision for a smaller implant size, which she felt aligned better with her desires.
Following her March procedure, Fessler expressed immense satisfaction with the results. She described her new breast size as being “exactly what I wanted”—comparable to a full B cup, a notable change from her previous DD cup size. Just a day after surgery, she was ecstatic to catch her first glimpse, despite Dr Stein encouraging her to refrain from looking too early, assuring her that improvements would continue over time.
Fessler has now entered the recovery phase, adhering to the post-operative instructions including wearing a surgical bra. From her perspective, the outcome has exceeded her expectations. She hopes to share her story as a testament to the importance of thorough research in cosmetic procedures. Reflecting on her past, she candidly admitted that she had not conducted sufficient diligence with her earlier surgeries, a misjudgment she is keen to rectify going forward.
Dr Stein remains optimistic about the success of this surgery, expressing a desire for it to be Fessler’s final one. He emphasised the complex nature of breast revision surgeries and the importance of ensuring a satisfactory outcome for his patients.
