A newlywed bride, Sarah Danh, is on her way back to the United States after a harrowing health crisis during her honeymoon in Japan. The 27-year-old married Luke Gradl, 28, on March 21, but their dream getaway took a distressing turn just days after they arrived. Danh experienced acute liver failure on April 9, just two days into their trip, prompting an urgent need for medical intervention.

Currently in critical condition, Danh has been undergoing treatment in Japan, where her situation became life-threatening almost immediately upon her arrival. Her family has confirmed that she is now on an emergency medical evacuation flight to San Antonio, Texas, where further medical care will be available. The flight is scheduled to land this evening, making it a month since the couple exchanged vows.

Danh’s mother, Le Le, had joined the couple in Japan initially to provide support but has since returned to the U.S. to be closer to home during this difficult time. The evacuation was coordinated with the help of her employer, Methodist Hospital Stone Oak, along with HCA Healthcare and AirMed. Their efforts have enabled a timely transfer back home, allowing Danh to receive specialised care.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Gradl and Le stated, “Thank you to HCA Healthcare and Methodist Hospital for providing the medical flight home. That generosity means more to us than we can put into words.” They further acknowledged the dedication of the medical professionals in Japan, who worked tirelessly to stabilise Danh’s condition before the evacuation and expressed relief that she is heading to a facility equipped for her needs.

The community support for Danh has also been overwhelming. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist with the costs associated with her recovery, successfully raising £167,000. “Your kindness, prayers, and support helped carry us through one of the hardest times in our lives,” the family expressed in a heartfelt message to those who contributed.

As Danh’s flight progresses, the severity of her condition remains concerning. Although she has been stabilised, her acute liver failure, which is a sudden and serious loss of liver function, continues to pose significant health risks. She has been exhibiting troubling symptoms, including jaundice, vomiting, fever, and severe hepatic encephalopathy, characterised by a decline in brain function typically due to severe liver issues.

The cause of Danh’s acute liver failure has not yet been identified. Her family noted that she showed no health issues during her wedding, which further adds to the mystery surrounding her sudden illness. Upon her arrival in Texas, Danh will undergo extensive medical testing to ascertain the underlying cause of her alarming symptoms.

Hepatic encephalopathy is particularly concerning, as it arises when the liver cannot adequately filter toxins from the bloodstream, potentially leading to severe cognitive impairment. Gradl indicated that Danh had also been facing challenges with her kidney function and intracranial pressure, complicating her recovery.

The family remains hopeful as they navigate this challenging chapter.
