In an interview with *PEOPLE*, Stewart, aged 37, discussed the importance of communication in their relationship. “I can’t believe that it’s been a year,” she shared. “We had the chance to celebrate with many of our friends from *Dancing with the Stars*, which made it all the more special.”

Stewart elaborated on what has become the cornerstone of their companionship. “I learned his language. We have this beautiful communication between us that holds our relationship together,” she stated, highlighting the bond they share. The couple’s dynamic primarily revolves around their ability to communicate effectively, something Stewart attributes to her commitment to learning American Sign Language (ASL).
Durant, who is deaf, was Stewart’s partner during Season 31 of *Dancing with the Stars*, which aired in 2022. Determined to foster a deeper connection, Stewart began learning ASL as she trained him in dance. “When I found out he was my partner, I immediately thought I must learn ASL,” she recalled. Her initiative to eliminate the need for an interpreter was a pivotal moment in their relationship, setting the stage for their emotional connection.
Their relationship blossomed beyond the ballroom, with the couple confirming their romantic involvement in February 2023 through an Instagram post on Valentine’s Day. In December 2023, Stewart revealed that they first noticed their romantic feelings for each other while competing on the show. “During the eighth week of *DWTS*, I began to see more of his life and experiences,” she explained. Durant added that he couldn’t envision life without Stewart after the competition ended, recognising that their connection transcended friendship.
The couple got engaged later that year, culminating in their marriage in August 2025, where they shared vows in ASL. Reflecting on their first year of marriage at the *Dancing with the Stars* Con in August 2026, Stewart expressed amazement at how quickly the time had passed. “It’s been beautiful,” she noted. “Honestly, not much has changed in our relationship, which I hear is a good thing.”
Stewart emphasised the joy of embarking on this new chapter of life, adding that the couple has intentionally focused on maintaining their connection amidst busy schedules. “We are very intentional with our relationship because we do spend a lot of time apart,” she explained. “But it’s all about how we stay connected, primarily through communication.”
The professional dancer described their first year as a “whirlwind,” yet credited Durant with making every experience seamless. “He makes everything so easy,” Stewart commented, illustrating the harmonious nature of their partnership.
As they move forward in their marriage, Stewart and Durant’s story stands as a testament to the power of communication in fostering a loving relationship. Their journey began on the dance floor, but it has evolved into a profound connection built on mutual understanding and respect. As they navigate life together, their commitment to open dialogue remains integral, underscoring the joy and strength found in their union.
