A California family is in mourning following a tragic incident involving eleven-year-old Callan West Perez, who was shot and killed at Elko Regional Airport in Nevada. The harrowing event unfolded on April 13, when it was reported that Callan’s father, Giovanni Perez, turned the gun on himself after allegedly shooting his son. Immediate investigations have revealed the situation stemmed from a contentious custody battle.

Callan, a student from Merced, California, was discovered in the airport bathroom with fatal injuries. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed shortly after arrival. According to the Elko Police Department, the father and son were travelling together in a rental car that had broken down near Winnemucca, Nevada. Following the breakdown, they were towed to Elko to procure a new vehicle.
The police report details how both father and son initially exited the restroom but returned shortly after, at which point Giovanni is said to have shot Callan “for an unknown reason.” Following this, he exited the bathroom and then took his own life near the ticket counter.

In the wake of this devastating event, Callan’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses and ongoing legal matters related to the custody arrangements. They remember him as an “incredibly smart, funny, and kind” boy, whose life was tragically cut short. Descriptions from family members paint a vivid portrait of Callan, describing him as having “the biggest heart and the sweetest soul.” They lament the untimely loss, stating that he “deserved so much more life, so many more laughs, and a future that was stolen far too soon.”
The relationship between Giovanni Perez and Callan’s maternal grandparents was reportedly fraught, with Giovanni trying to keep Callan away from them, as well as from his own family. Notably, Callan’s mother did not have custody, but she maintained contact with her son during his upbringing.
The incident highlights the emotional turmoil often present in custody disputes, particularly when mental health issues come into play. Elko police have stated that Giovanni was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) linked to his military service, although no clear motive has yet been established regarding the shooting.
In a series of heartfelt posts on social media, Giovanni’s father, Frank Perez, expressed his grief for both his son and grandson. On April 20, he lamented that Giovanni “never got the help he needed” and emphasised the love Callan had for the world. As the community rallies to support Callan’s grieving family, the incident raises pressing questions about the intersection of mental health, familial relationships, and the impact such tragedies have on innocent lives.
This heartbreaking case serves as a sombre reminder of the complexities that can arise in family dynamics and the severe consequences that can occur when mental health issues remain unaddressed. Friends, family, and the community at large continue to grieve the loss of a young life filled with potential, while calls for greater awareness around mental health support come to the fore.
