Elderly Cruise Passenger Reportedly Climbed Safety Railing and ‘Jumped’ from Ship During Australian Sailing 

An incident involving a passenger from the Carnival Splendor cruise ship has prompted a substantial search operation near Moreton Island, Australia. Reports indicate that a man in his seventies may have jumped over the safety railing and into the water while the ship was underway on Friday, sparking a swift response from maritime authorities.

Witnesses recounted that the man was travelling with family members, who became concerned after he went missing. Upon alerting the ship’s crew, footage from the onboard CCTV was reviewed, revealing that the passenger had indeed climbed over the railing and jumped into the sea. The revelation led to an immediate alert being raised to all relevant authorities.

The Carnival Splendor was en route from Moreton Island to Sydney at the time of the incident. The cruise ship, which is on a four-day round trip and scheduled to return to Sydney on April 19, was reportedly sailing along the coast when the passenger was last seen. A spokesperson for Carnival confirmed that the company is fully cooperating with investigators as the search continues.

Following the alarming report, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) launched an extensive air and sea search operation, drawing on various resources. The operation has involved multiple jets from Cairns and Melbourne, as well as several rescue helicopters dispatched from the Brisbane region. Furthermore, six surface vessels have been deployed to scour the waters where the man reportedly entered the sea.

Despite these extensive efforts, search operations were temporarily halted on Saturday evening due to the lack of any conclusive findings regarding the missing passenger. The Queensland Police Service confirmed on April 20 that search efforts would continue until there was more clarity on the situation.

An unidentified passenger aboard the Carnival Splendor detailed witnessing rescue helicopters searching the area while the vessel remained anchored off Moreton Island. The captain informed those on board that the ship would depart the location by 3 p.m. local time on Sunday, with an expected arrival in Sydney around 6 p.m.

In light of the ongoing search, Carnival Cruise Line has communicated with its passengers regarding adjustments to scheduling. The company sent out a notice to those set to embark on the next sailing of the Carnival Splendor, informing them that check-in and embarkation would be delayed.
