A 59-year-old woman from Michigan has experienced a dramatic transformation in her quality of life following a groundbreaking robotic spinal fusion procedure. Kara Galbraith, who had endured persistent pain due to spondylolisthesis and a pinched nerve, recently underwent surgery that has allowed her to walk pain-free for the first time in years.

Galbraith, who resides in Laurium, first began to notice issues with her right leg a decade ago during her daily walks. After extensive medical evaluations, she was diagnosed with spondylolysis, a condition characterised by a small fracture between two vertebrae in the spine. According to the Cleveland Clinic, although spondylolysis typically causes lower back pain, surgery is rarely required. Unfortunately, for Galbraith, the condition progressed into spondylolisthesis, wherein a stress fracture led to abnormal movement of the vertebrae.
Despite her attempts to manage the pain through exercise, the situation deteriorated, prompting her to seek further medical advice. By late 2024, Galbraith’s pain had intensified, leading to a diagnosis of a pinched nerve. At this point, her healthcare team presented multiple treatment options including pain medications, steroid injections, physical therapy, and surgery.

After trying physical therapy and a steroid injection with limited success, she was referred to a neurosurgeon. The expert recommended spinal fusion to stabilise her vertebrae and alleviate pressure on the affected nerve. However, another setback emerged when Galbraith was diagnosed with osteoporosis, a condition that significantly weakens bones, making surgical interventions riskier.

Reflecting on her situation, Galbraith expressed her frustration, stating, “I could have just cried,” as her mobility was severely hampered. Concerned about her ability to walk, she diligently researched neurosurgeons and ultimately decided on Dr. Mohamad Bydon, Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine, who has been at the forefront of integrating robotic and minimally invasive techniques into spinal surgery.
Traditionally, surgery for spondylolisthesis is invasive, necessitating a large incision along the back. This approach can result in extended recovery times and increased blood loss. However, Dr. Bydon has developed robotic methods that significantly lessen both incision sizes and surgery duration. This modern technique allows for the fusion of vertebral bones through a much smaller incision, reducing muscle dissection and potential complications.
Galbraith underwent robotic spinal fusion surgery last September, a procedure that lasted approximately 75 minutes. With an incision merely the size of a grape, the operation was completed with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. Dr. Bydon described the advantages of this method, stating that it not only reduces recovery time but also preserves greater spinal mobility compared to more invasive surgeries.
Waking up post-surgery, Galbraith recalled feeling an intense sense of relief, sharing, “As I woke up, there was no pain in my leg. As soon as they got me up to walk, I could walk.” This marked a significant turning point in her journey towards recovering a normal life.
Three months post-operation, Galbraith, who works as a patient advocate and administrative secretary at a hospital, reported positive progress in her recovery. “Everything is getting fired back up, little by little,” she said, underscoring that recovery requires patience. Her journey remains a poignant reminder that there are no shortcuts to achieving a successful outcome: “Slow and steady wins the race,” she concluded.
