Amid the complexities of parenting during the pandemic, a remarkable entrepreneurial journey emerged in the life of Juliana B., a mother juggling the care of a newborn and an energetic toddler. What began as a simple endeavour to keep her 18-month-old entertained using dyed rice has flourished into a thriving business, known as The Creative Mix Shop, generating six-figure sales and helping countless other women find their footing in the world of entrepreneurship.

In the early days of the pandemic, Juliana, faced with the challenges of confinement and caring for a two-month-old, turned to her pantry for inspiration. The vibrant dyed rice she created not only captured her toddler’s attention but also afforded Juliana the precious minutes of respite she desperately needed. “I was honestly taken aback that something so simple had given me that much breathing space,” she reflected, recalling the hour of delight her toddler found in the colourful grains.

Initially, her intentions revolved solely around making a fun activity for her child. However, curiosity led her to test the waters of entrepreneurship by listing a few bags of the dyed rice on Facebook Marketplace. The positive response sparked an unexpected venture, fueling her creativity as she expanded her offerings to include homemade Play-Doh kits and other sensory activities.
Soon after, Juliana made the leap to Etsy, despite having no prior experience in setting up an online store. Within three days of launching her shop, she secured her first sale, a vital milestone in her newfound journey. By late 2021, sales were climbing remarkably, culminating in over $6,300 (£4,800) in a single month. “At that moment, I realised this could truly grow into something significant,” she said, recognising the potential of her venture.
As the business continued to flourish, Juliana expanded her product line to cater to various sensory play needs. Nevertheless, by 2023, she realised that diversifying her products was detrimental to her enjoyment and focus. Making the strategic decision to concentrate solely on sensory mixes and fillers proved fruitful, leading to a surge in sales and consistency in her brand identity. To date, she has sold over 10,000 sensory mixes, all while simultaneously homeschooling her two daughters.
Juliana’s business model reflects her commitment to passion and efficiency. “When you pour your effort into something you truly believe in, growth follows,” she shared, noting how her daily routine has transformed from packing orders at her kitchen table to creating tutorials and interacting with aspiring entrepreneurs online. Alongside her entrepreneurial pursuits, she homeschools in the mornings, balancing her family life with her growing business, and also shares insights into her passion for fitness on social media.
However, Juliana’s success also raises important conversations around the use of food items like rice in children’s activities, particularly in light of food insecurity. She expresses awareness of the diverse perspectives surrounding her products and encourages parents to consider alternatives if they are uncomfortable. “There isn’t a singular approach to sensory play; this is simply what has resonated with me and those I serve,” she explained.
Through her initiative, the Sensory Makers community, Juliana has begun to mentor women seeking similar opportunities, drawing from her own experiences of trial and uncertainty in the beginning stages of her business. “I was just a mum wanting to earn a little on the side. Now, empowering others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams feels like a full-circle moment,” she remarked, conveying her passion for supporting fellow women in their journeys.
For those contemplating starting a business, Juliana’s advice is refreshingly straightforward: “Focus on your own path and stay driven by your passion. Don’t be deterred by what others are doing; persistence is key.” Her journey illustrates not just the potential of a single idea but also the profound impact of community and support in navigating the world of entrepreneurship.
