### Urgent Warning as New World Screwworm Threatens Texas Livestock

Concerns are growing in Texas as officials have confirmed the presence of the New World screwworm, a virulent flesh-eating parasite, just 90 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. This discovery raises alarms for ranchers and livestock owners, as the screwworm poses a significant threat to both animal health and human safety.

The New World screwworm, which originates from South America, has been on a concerning northward trajectory. It was first detected approximately 400 miles from the U.S. border last July, but most recently, it has been identified in Nuevo León, Mexico. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller emphasised the immediacy of the situation in a statement released on 10 April, asserting that the parasite is not a distant concern but an urgent threat to the state’s livestock industry and overall food supply.

Miller stated, “This is a high-stakes situation for our ranchers, our livestock industry, and our food supply. We are moving aggressively to stay ahead of it.” The urgency comes from the screwworm’s ability to inflict devastating damage on cattle, which are vital to Texas’s agricultural economy.
Colin Woodall, CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, elaborated on the unsettling nature of the screwworm. This parasite lays its eggs on the skin of livestock, where the larvae then infest the animal’s flesh, effectively eating it from within. Woodall remarked on the horror that this parasite presents, stating that it is an “absolutely horrific” threat to livestock.
While its primary victims are animals, human infections are also possible. A documented case occurred last August when a Maryland resident reported a screwworm infection after travelling to El Salvador. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms can include painful sores and lesions, with larvae potentially being found in areas such as open wounds, orifices, and even the eyes. Such infections can be distressing, leading to significant health complications.
Despite efforts to contain its spread, Miller acknowledged that progress has been insufficient. “The reality is the spread of the New World screwworm has not been successfully contained to date. That is a serious concern,” he stated, underscoring the need for proactive measures in Texas to fend off this escalating threat.
The Texas Department of Agriculture is calling on all ranchers to remain vigilant. Miller urged livestock producers to be on high alert for any signs of infection in their herds. He advised, “Check your animals. Know the signs. If you see anything unusual, report it immediately.” This guidance is critical, as rapid detection is essential to mitigate the risks associated with a full-blown outbreak, which could have catastrophic repercussions for livestock and livelihoods alike.
The situation surrounding the New World screwworm remains fluid, and Texas officials are prepared to utilise “every available tool” to combat its encroachment.
