Shayla Talei, a 31-year-old resident of Oklahoma City, has gained an impressive following of over 249,000 supporters on TikTok as she chronicles her ongoing battle with debilitating chronic illnesses. Diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) at the tender age of 17, her life has taken an unexpected turn, leading her to manage multiple health challenges that people around her are now becoming increasingly aware of through her social media presence.

Initially, Shayla believed the discomfort she felt was a result of a pinched sciatic nerve, but it soon became apparent that her condition was significantly more serious. With her illness evolving over the years, she developed gastroparesis, a condition that paralyses the stomach muscles, making food digestion virtually impossible. As a direct consequence, Shayla relies on intravenous nutrition and fluids for sustenance, having not consumed a traditional meal in over three years.

Her TikTok channel provides a glimpse into her daily medical routines. Viewers can see the various pumps and IV lines that allow her to remain nourished while offering insights into the practical realities of living with chronic pain. In her videos, she candidly shares her experiences, ensuring that her audience understands the often challenging path she navigates each day.
Having managed her own salon for eight years, Shayla was forced to close its doors last spring as her health issues became increasingly overwhelming. Fatigue and sudden fainting spells have become all too common in her life, forcing her to use a wheelchair accompanied by a TPN backpack, which runs continuously for up to 12 hours a day. “I would say I’m a 90-year-old woman in a 31-year-old’s body,” Shayla remarked, highlighting the immense toll her conditions take on her energy levels.
The journey into her illness began with a seemingly trivial injury. Just one morning, she awoke to discover her left leg was numb and ice-cold, leading to her diagnosis of CRPS. The Mayo Clinic describes this chronic pain disorder as often developing post-injury, leading to intense discomfort disproportionate to the original trauma. Shayla’s struggles with CRPS played a pivotal role in why her body feels under constant siege.
In a surprising twist, approximately two years ago, Shayla learned that her CRPS had progressed to gastroparesis, something she hadn’t expected. It took her medical team almost a year to officially diagnose this new issue, during which she faced persistent pain and concern over her inability to keep food down. Such challenges resulted in noticeable weight loss—around 100 lbs. in just eight months—during which she was hospitalised for severe malnutrition.
“Your body hurts from being malnourished, and there are many physiological aspects of your body that start shutting down,” Shayla explained. After stressful months of searching for solutions, she was fitted with a feeding tube to help tackle her nutritional needs. However, even with this intervention, she faced significant challenges in managing her inches of intake and sometimes found consuming food and liquids to be agonising experiences.
As of now, Shayla reports that consuming water is excruciatingly painful, noting that every sip feels as if shards of glass are forcing their way down her throat. Her medical team explored tube feeding as a means to provide sustenance, but the pain persisted, ultimately necessitating the use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), which delivers nutrients directly into her bloodstream.
Today, Shayla’s routine may be demanding, but she experiences far less pain associated with food. Nevertheless, she mourns the vivid taste of food—an act she misses dearly. Although she can technically consume certain foods via a G-tube, a condition has now developed causing allergic reactions to anything she attempts to eat. Those familiar smells that once brought her joy now trigger nausea, further complicating her relationship with food.
Through her candid storytelling and openness about her struggles, Shayla Talei aims to raise awareness about the realities of living with chronic illness. By sharing her journey on TikTok, she strives to foster understanding and empathy, connecting with others who may share similar battles, thereby enriching the life of those around her and providing them with hope amidst their own difficulties.
