As the landmark 50th season of ‘Survivor’ approaches, showrunner and host Jeff Probst has sought a unique way to recognise the dedication of the production crew that has been integral to the show’s success over the years. In a thoughtful gesture, he decided to give them custom dog tag necklaces, marking not just the anniversary but also the hard work and camaraderie that define the team.

Probst recounted that when he first conceived the idea for this gift, he wanted something personal and meaningful, a departure from the typical crew gifts like jackets or hats. Drawing inspiration from his own experience, Probst wears a dog tag from his wedding that bears the words “Dance with me.” This personal connection informed his desire to create a gift that felt unique to every crew member.

In his search for the right artisan to craft these necklaces, Probst stumbled upon Heavy Metalz Studio, run by sisters Amanda Vernor and Gina Thompson. After an initial inquiry, the sisters, based in Florida, began collaborating with Probst without initially knowing who their client was. Their first thought was simply that someone was celebrating a grand 50th anniversary. As discussions progressed and the orders increased to hundreds, they eventually pieced together that they were indeed creating dog tags for ‘Survivor 50’.

Once the scope of the project was clear, Probst communicated his vision for the dog tags to state “Survivor 50.” The sisters shared that upon realising the recipient of their work, they felt a surge of excitement. They knew they had a special task ahead, and Probst’s choice of wording further validated their skills in design.
Vernor and Thompson embarked on the monumental task of handcrafting 450 dog tags, each uniquely engraved and numbered. This substantial order was the biggest they had ever taken, and the sisters transformed their workspace into a makeshift production line to meet the challenge. Each tag required meticulous attention as they gathered materials, created the right sizes, and stamped letters, all while managing their business responsibilities.
In early April, the finished dog tags were sent to Fiji, where the ‘Survivor 50’ crew was set to film. Probst wanted the distribution of the necklaces to emphasise equality and unity among the team. Crew members—ranging from producers to housekeepers—were invited to choose their dog tags from a communal box, emphasising that every staff member, regardless of their tenure, played a vital role in the show’s success. Probst recounted that a new crew member was fortunate enough to pull tag number one, symbolically emphasising that all contributions matter, whether they have been part of the show since its inception or had just joined.
The dog tags have quickly become cherished tokens among the crew, with many reflecting on their significance. Diver Jayde Leota remarked, “The dog tags represent more than just the season. They represent the crew, the hard work, and the bond we’ve built along the way.” Others, like Dionne Jones from the camera department, appreciated how each necklace had a unique number, celebrating the hand-crafted nature of each piece.
Filming the 50th season has been described as the most joyful period of Probst’s professional life. He has openly expressed gratitude for the continued longevity of the show and the hard work of every crew member, who persevered with smiles despite the demanding nature of the production. In what has been a fast-paced environment, Probst emphasised the importance of celebrating achievements, noting that the milestone served as a moment to appreciate the collective efforts of everyone involved.
Probst also drew parallels to family traditions, recalling how he often marked special achievements with celebrations, typically involving cake. Reminiscing about these moments, he highlighted the significance of taking time to acknowledge accomplishments, even in the fast-moving world of television. Probst’s son even encouraged him to get a cake to commemorate ‘Survivor 50’, reinforcing the idea that celebrations serve as important rites of passage.
As ‘Survivor’ continues to air weekly on CBS, this commemorative season stands not just as a testament to the show’s resilience but also as a celebration of the people behind the camera, whose hard work and dedication forge the essence of the series. The custom dog tags serve as more than mere souvenirs—they encapsulate the legacy of teamwork, perseverance, and the unique bond forged over two decades of reality television.
