Three individuals were hospitalised following a serious incident in Massachusetts when a towering 100-foot pine tree fell onto their pickup truck, causing it to catch fire. The dramatic event occurred around 7 a.m. on a Monday morning along Fitchburg Road in the Leominster State Forest.

Eyewitness Ruzbin Martinez, who was travelling in a different vehicle at the time, recounted the harrowing moment when he saw smoke billowing up from the scene. Martinez, the owner of New Era Paving, described the sequence of events: “I went by in my box truck, then I looked in my rearview mirror and saw this truck cross into the middle of the road. Then came the smoke.”

The incident has drawn attention to the inherent dangers of driving through forested areas, particularly during adverse weather conditions that may weaken trees. According to Princeton Fire Chief John Bennett, the tree impacted the truck with such force it crushed the vehicle and trapped one passenger inside. Chief Bennett recounted the severity of the situation, stating: “The tree literally came across the hood of the truck through the windshield.”
As a result of the falling tree, a fire broke out, adding to the complexity of the rescue operation. Chief Bennett noted the extraordinary luck of the occupants, saying that one of the branches penetrated the engine block while another narrowly missed both of the front seat passengers. Remarkably, another branch came through the back of the vehicle but just avoided the rear passenger. “They were extremely lucky,” Bennett remarked.
The trio, whose identities have not been publicly disclosed, were travelling to work when the crash occurred. After the emergency services responded, they were transported to UMASS Medical Center in Worcester for treatment. Reports indicate that two of them sustained injuries to their legs, which may require surgical intervention, while the third was later released.
Local authorities acted swiftly following the incident, temporarily closing the road to facilitate the removal of both the fallen tree and the heavily damaged pickup truck. Fortunately, the road in the Leominster State Forest has since been reopened to traffic.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tree’s fall and its implications for safety in forested regions, community members are reminded to be cautious while driving on rural routes, particularly in areas with significant tree coverage.
There has yet to be any detailed response from the Princeton Fire Department regarding the specifics of the recovery operation or any further safety measures that may be implemented following this incident. Local residents are left contemplating the random nature of such accidents and the potential hazards posed by natural elements.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable power of nature and its capacity to create unforeseen challenges for those travelling through even the most scenic of landscapes.
