A former aircraft technician, Frank Bucci, has filed a lawsuit against United Airlines, asserting that his dismissal was not only wrongful but also rooted in age discrimination and retaliation for raising safety concerns. The 76-year-old, who dedicated four decades to the airline, claims his termination was linked to a situation where he sought water while suffering from heat-related illness during an outdoor work shift.

The lawsuit, which is now a matter of public record, details events leading to Bucci’s dismissal in April 2025. His role primarily involved ensuring the safety and readiness of aircraft through various inspections and maintenance tasks, often carried out under challenging outdoor conditions.
According to the legal documentation, Bucci faced severe heat while performing his responsibilities at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). On the date of his termination, he experienced troubling symptoms, including light-headedness and heart palpitations, prompting him to search for water to alleviate his condition. The lawsuit claims that United Airlines had failed to provide adequate hydration facilities for its employees, despite the sweltering conditions.
The complaint states that Bucci briefly left his work station in search of relief from his heat-related symptoms, ultimately finding a bottle of water inside an aircraft. It was this action that the airline cited as grounds for his termination. Bucci contends that his need for water was a direct result of a serious temporary illness that should be recognised as a disability under California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).
In connection with his actions, Bucci reportedly communicated both verbally and in writing that his hydration efforts were simply a response to being dehydrated after extensive outdoor work. However, United Airlines dismissed his explanations and proceeded with his termination, maintaining that he had acted inappropriately.
Adding to his claims, Bucci also alleges that he was discriminated against based on his age. He asserts that the airline retaliated against him for repeatedly raising concerns regarding aircraft safety issues. Specific instances mentioned in the lawsuit include a serious incident in March 2024 when a United plane lost a tire. Bucci alleges that when he reported this problem, his supervisor dismissed his concerns, prioritising timely departures over passenger safety.
The complaint further claims that Bucci was replaced by younger technicians following his termination, a move that he argues was indicative of age bias. He points out disparities in treatment between himself and younger colleagues while he was still employed, suggesting an environment in which older employees were treated unfavourably.
Bucci is now pursuing legal action for wrongful termination and age discrimination, as well as retaliation for voicing safety concerns. He argues that the actions taken by United Airlines were an attempt to use the incident surrounding his hydration break as a pretext for ending his employment.
As the case progresses, it has been assigned to a U.S. judge as of early April. Both Bucci and his legal representatives have reached out to United Airlines for comments regarding the suit, however, no response has been forthcoming as yet.
This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding employee rights, especially for older workers in physically demanding jobs, and the duty of employers to ensure safe working conditions. As Bucci seeks both justice and restitution, the impact of this lawsuit may resonate beyond his individual experience, potentially influencing workplace policies across the aviation industry.
