Jen Hamilton, a prominent labour and delivery nurse and influencer, has recently shared the story behind the name of her second son, Luke, which she originally chose to be Aspen. The decision to change her son’s name came after a year of reflection, as she discovered that the name did not quite align with her son’s personality.

In a video shared via a collaboration with BabyCenter, Hamilton, who has an impressive social media following of 2.3 million on Instagram and over 5 million on TikTok, elaborated on her unique naming journey. She explained the thought process that led her to initially select the name Aspen, which she felt embodied an outdoorsy spirit, influenced by her husband’s penchant for nature.
However, upon the birth of her son, Hamilton quickly realised that Aspen was not a fitting name for her child. “He gets car sick in the Chick-fil-A drive-thru,” she remarked with a touch of humour, highlighting that her son had a much more laid-back, indoor disposition. She even recounted a moment where he gagged at the mere thought of a blueberry, leading her to affectionately refer to him as an “indoor cat.”

Reflecting on the decision to change her son’s name, Hamilton noted, “After a while, I was like, this is not this dude’s name.” The legal process of renaming him took a full year, during which she gained further insight into her son’s character. Through her experiences, Hamilton now encourages expecting parents to spend time with their newborns before finalising a name. “You’re trying to name someone you’ve never met before. I don’t think I should have been trusted to name anything, honestly, during that time in my life,” she said.
Hamilton is mother to two sons, Ellis and Luke, whom she shares with her estranged husband, Brian Hamilton. The couple, who exchanged vows in August 2012, announced their separation earlier this year. On social media, Hamilton opened up about their split, making allegations against Brian, including claims of him leading a “double life” and being romantically involved with another woman.
In her recent appearances, including an episode of the podcast Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce, Hamilton spoke candidly about her post-separation life. “I’ve lost 200 lbs. I didn’t know if you knew that. 200 lbs. of man,” she quipped, expressing a newfound sense of liberation and personal growth following the end of her marriage.
The transition from the name Aspen to Luke symbolises not only a personal journey but also serves as a reflection of the significant changes Hamilton has undergone in her life. Her candid storytelling and willingness to share both her joys and challenges resonate with her audience, further solidifying her role as an influential figure in the parenting community.
As Hamilton navigates her new chapter, her insights into parenting, identity, and personal resilience continue to inspire her followers. Her experience serves as a reminder that names, like individuals, can evolve and that understanding one’s child is a vital aspect of parenthood.
