In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Dan Bucatinsky, known for his roles in “Scandal” and “The Comeback,” opened up about the joys and challenges of parenting alongside his husband, Don Roos. The couple, who have been together for over three decades and married since 2008, share two children, 21-year-old Eliza and 18-year-old Jonah.

Bucatinsky reflected on the unique paths his children are forging as they transition into adulthood. Interestingly, both Eliza and Jonah have shown little interest in following their fathers into the entertainment industry. Instead, they are developing their own individual passions and interests that diverge from the world of show business.

Jonah, currently completing his senior year of high school, has developed a keen interest in military topics and audiovisual production. He runs the news station at his school, showcasing his talents behind the camera. Bucatinsky noted the stark contrast between Jonah’s interests and those of his fathers, stating, “He has a whole series of interests that are alien to me, but it’s sort of fun to watch this person evolve.”

Bucatinsky jokingly shared that he and Roos did not encourage Jonah’s desire to attend military school, yet they find his enthusiasm for this field intriguing. Despite his military fascination, Jonah still seems to explore a variety of hobbies, dabbing in audiovisual work and gaining experience in sound equipment and podcasting.

Meanwhile, Eliza is navigating her own journey. Bucatinsky mentioned she is currently busy getting her driver’s licence and searching for a job as she figures out her career aspirations. He acknowledged her unique strengths and personal path, which further highlight the individuality that both children possess.

While Bucatinsky and Roos would undoubtedly support their children should they decide to venture into the arts, the likelihood of this seems minimal. Bucatinsky revealed that his children do not engage with his work in television, lamenting, “They don’t watch the shows I’m on.” Ironically, his daughter has enjoyed a particular episode of “Superstore” on several occasions, which remains an anomaly in their viewing habits.

Reflecting on the parenting experience, Bucatinsky emphasised the importance of adaptability. He quipped, “What To Expect When You’re Expecting should just have one page that reads, ‘They’re going to become teenagers.’ It’s been challenging and fantastic to see how they evolve into the adults they are.” The couple’s experience has evolved since they adopted their children, with Bucatinsky noting that their kids appear to be happier than they were at that age.

Despite their children’s disinterest in showbiz, Bucatinsky expressed pride in their accomplishments and individuality. He elaborated on Jonah’s capabilities at the Army and Navy Academy, where he is known for his expertise, hinting that Jonah might eventually secure a job behind the scenes in media due to his growing proficiency.

As the family savours their time together during this transitional phase, Bucatinsky highlighted the bittersweet nature of parenting as children mature and seek their independence. “It won’t be forever, but for now it’s kind of nice,” he remarked, signifying the closeness they currently share.
