A Houston couple experienced a shocking turn of events early on Easter Sunday when they discovered a man trapped in their chimney, thanks to the alertness of their dog. Joni Mitchell and her husband Curt were awakened around 12:30 AM by their pet dog, Ellie, who began barking at some unusual noises emanating from the fireplace.

Joni Mitchell recounted the unusual incident to local news station KHOU 11. “I was like, ‘What’s going on, Ellie?’ And I did hear some noises,” she said. It soon became clear that the disturbances were more than just an animal outside. She began hearing groaning sounds from the chimney, which prompted her to shake her husband awake.

Initially, Curt expressed uncertainty about the situation, speculating that a raccoon might have gotten into the house. However, upon investigating further, his perspective shifted dramatically. “I came down and opened the flue inside the fireplace … and this guy was … freaking out,” he reported.

The scene escalated quickly, and the couple called emergency services. Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter, having to break down part of the fireplace to rescue the individual. As they worked, the man revealed to a firefighter that he was “being chased and was trying to get away from something,” according to Curt. He vividly described the moment when the rescue team broke through, saying, “When they broke it in, the front fell off, and there was his face and his shoulders.”
The man, identified as 33-year-old Edwin Leonel Salmeron Granados, has since been charged with burglary of a habitation, as documented by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office obtained by PEOPLE. Authorities confirmed that the Houston Police Department apprehended Granados at approximately 1:35 AM. He is set to appear in court again on April 10.
Investigations revealed that Granados likely gained access to the couple’s property by climbing a fence before attempting to descend into the chimney, where he ultimately became stuck. The couple expressed disbelief over the bizarre encounter. Joni remarked, “I’ve never ever heard anything like this before. It was crazy.”
Curt also reflected on the damage left in the wake of the incident, jokingly expressing concern about the potential costs of repairs. “I hope we don’t have to pay for it because that looks really expensive,” he added, highlighting both the unusual nature of the situation and the uncertainty that accompanies it.
Photographs taken from the scene show the damaged area, prompting many in the community to react with a mix of astonishment and humour. The story of the trapped burglar has since circulated widely, with many sharing their thoughts on social media.
Community members have offered their support to the couple, who have now turned the unusual event into a much-discussed anecdote. The story serves as a stark reminder of unexpected incidents that can occur behind closed doors, as well as a reflection on our society’s priorities around security and safety.
As the couple begins to process the episode, they, and the surrounding community, are left with lingering questions about what led to this bizarre situation and how Granados will navigate the legal ramifications of his actions.
