**Cancer Survivor Celebrates Milestone with Heartwarming Restaurant Tribute**

On December 30, 2024, Megan Simandl experienced a moment that will forever take a prominent place in her life. At just 19 years old, after nearly a year of rigorous treatment for acute promyelocytic leukaemia, Megan triumphantly rang the bell symbolising the end of her battle with cancer. To commemorate this significant achievement, she gathered with family at Carmelo’s Italian Restaurant in Punta Gorda, Florida, where she was employed. Little did she know, a spectacular surprise awaited her.
Upon entering the restaurant, Megan was enveloped by an incredible display of affection. The table reserved for her was adorned with an abundance of flowers, gifts, and celebratory balloons. “It made me feel so special and seen,” she expressed, reflecting on her emotions from that night. “It was the biggest day of my life, and my people at Carmelo’s made sure I felt special,” she shared.
Megan’s battle began in the spring of 2023 when she noticed alarming symptoms that contrasted sharply with her previously active lifestyle. Experiencing extreme fatigue, unexplained bruising, and spontaneous bleeding from various parts of her body, she felt desperate for answers. “I started experiencing a very strange list of symptoms… I felt so unwell and had no idea why,” she recounted.
After pressure from her mother, Megan had blood tests conducted, which led to a swift emergency room visit. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia, an aggressive form of the disease characterised by uncontrolled multiplication of immature white blood cells, impairing the body’s ability to produce healthy blood cells.
Following her diagnosis, Megan underwent intensive treatment, spending 37 consecutive days in hospital to receive chemotherapy, followed by eight months of outpatient care. Remarkably, throughout this difficult period, she continued to work at Carmelo’s, where she had been part of the team for three years. “I would go home [after chemotherapy], change my clothes and go to work,” she explained, emphasising how important it was for her to maintain a sense of normalcy during her treatment.
The support Megan received from her colleagues at Carmelo’s exceeded all expectations. The management team, including Steve Brown and John Milone, provided understanding and kindness, allowing her to adjust her work schedule as necessary without compromising her health. “They understood how important it was for me to remain working through chemo,” she noted.
Moreover, her coworkers rallied together, establishing a collection for her that ultimately raised £10,000 to help with her medical expenses. “Carmelo’s was there before I was diagnosed… my coworkers were worried, covering my shifts, urging me to seek medical attention,” she recalled. This collective support fostered a sense of unity and compassion within the workplace, creating an environment where Megan felt truly valued even in her darkest times.
On the night of her celebration, after the family dinner generously covered by restaurant owner Carmelo Mangiafico, Megan was called into the main dining room for a special presentation. With heartfelt words, he acknowledged her strength and resilience in overcoming her illness. “This lovely lady is named Megan. She is our friend, our colleague, and our coworker, and today, she rang the bell because she just beat cancer,” he remarked, leaving her emotional and grateful.
The touching moment resonated with many; a video of the speech shared on social media garnered over a million views. “You’re not the toughest woman I know; you are the toughest person I know,” he added, highlighting the indomitable spirit Megan exhibited throughout her ordeal.
Now at 21, Megan Simandl is pursuing a career as a paediatric nurse and certified personal trainer, embodying hope and resilience. Reflecting on her experience, she described the surreal feeling of having survived a challenge that once seemed insurmountable. “There was a point where I had great doubts if I was going to make it through my treatment,” she admitted, reaffirming the miracle her survival represents.
Megan’s journey, bolstered by the unwavering support from her work family at Carmelo’s, demonstrates the extraordinary impact of compassion in the workplace. She expressed gratitude for their commitment to her well-being during her battle. “My experience was nothing short of amazing. The management is incredible, they care about their people, and that’s so incredibly hard to find,” she remarked, contrasting it with her previous experiences in the restaurant industry.
