Teddi Mellencamp, the well-known reality television star, has recently opened up about her new relationship while simultaneously navigating the challenges of her private life, including her battle with cancer and her recent divorce. Speaking on her podcast “Two Ts in a Pod” alongside co-host Tamra Judge, Mellencamp revealed details about her relationship with a man she has referred to as “Derek.”

Describing him as older than herself, Mellencamp spoke about the complexities that come with dating when both partners have children. The 44-year-old, who shares three children—Slate, 12, Cruz, 11, and Dove, 6—with her ex-husband Edwin Arroyave, acknowledged the difficulties of finding time to meet due to their shared parental responsibilities. “That’s the thing when you’re dating and you’re both parents,” she commented, noting the challenges of intimacy when children are present.

Mellencamp admitted that her approach to dating has shifted significantly since her past relationships, as she is now prioritising a slower pace. “I’m taking it slow with him. Normally that hasn’t been my past,” she shared, indicating a newfound perspective on her personal life.
The impact of her ongoing health battle, including treatment for stage 4 cancer, also plays a crucial role in her current relationship. Mellencamp has been undergoing immunotherapy after her diagnosis of metastasised melanoma, which has affected her brain and lungs. Fortunately, she noted that Derek has been a source of support, describing him as a positive and logical individual who has made her laugh during tough times. “He’s pretty good about it,” she remarked, highlighting the importance of a supportive partner amid her health struggles.
Despite her willingness to embrace her new relationship, Mellencamp confessed that she occasionally overextends herself socially, as demonstrated by a recent outing where she felt overly tired the following day. “I was like, ‘I actually have enough energy right now,’” she recalled, before realising that she had pushed herself too far.
Reflecting on her previous marriage, which ended in November 2024, Mellencamp expressed a desire to have been more open with Arroyave about her needs during challenging times. She wished for simple companionship, saying, “I just wanted somebody to come lay in bed with me and watch a movie.” This longing for connection demonstrates the emotional challenges she faced both during her marriage and her health crisis.
Looking back at old messages exchanged with Arroyave, Mellencamp noted a sense of disconnection in their communication that troubled her. “It’s just so flippant,” she commented, indicating an emotional gap that persisted even during their attempts to mend their marital issues. Despite their efforts, including relationship retreats and attending church together, unresolved conflicts ultimately led to their separation.
Mellencamp is keen to emphasise that, while they are no longer together, she does not harbour any ill will towards Arroyave. Reflecting on their relationship, she stated, “To this day, I don’t hate Edwin,” revealing that he was her primary support during her cancer diagnosis.
Teddi Mellencamp’s journey with cancer began in 2022 when she was first diagnosed with stage 2 melanoma, a notably aggressive form of skin cancer. Following numerous surgeries, she learned in April 2025 that the disease had progressed to her brain and lungs. While she continues to be classified as stage 4, doctors have informed her that she shows “no trace of cancer.”
As Mellencamp navigates her new relationship alongside her health challenges, she is taking time to appreciate what truly matters: laughter, support, and connection. Her candid discussions regarding personal issues offer a glimpse into her resilience and determination to find a balance between her health, motherhood, and life beyond the spotlight.
