Linda McMahon, the United States Secretary of Education, has faced backlash following a social media tribute to esteemed civil rights advocate and journalist Ida B. Wells. The criticism arises from McMahon’s choice to accompany her tribute with an A.I.-generated image rather than a historical photograph of Wells, who has been an influential figure in the fight against racial injustice.

On April 10, McMahon posted on Truth Social as part of her ongoing series dedicated to remarkable women in American history. The post featured an artificial intelligence-generated image labelled “Photo by Gemini,” depicting a woman sitting at a desk. In her message, McMahon quoted Wells, saying, “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them,” and praised the activist’s courage and commitment to exposing injustices.

While the intention behind the tribute was acknowledged, historians and critics have voiced concerns, especially given that Wells, who passed away in 1931, had a variety of authentic photographs taken during her lifetime. Prominent author Paula Giddings, known for her biography *Ida: A Sword Among Lions*, expressed her disappointment with the Education Secretary’s decision.

Giddings stated, “While I appreciated the recognition of Ida B. Wells, the decision to use an A.I. generated image undermines the very values she stood for: truth-telling and her lifelong campaign against false representations. McMahon is not new to controversy surrounding her social media content. In addition to the tribute to Wells, she has used A.I. imagery to depict other historical figures, including Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, and Sacagawea. The choice of A.I. images has raised questions about the authenticity of representations in educational discussions.

In another instance, a video posted by the White House featured clips from various films stitched together with footage of purported U.S. military activity, captioned “Justice the American way.” Such examples have ignited discussions regarding the responsible use of media by public figures and institutions, particularly when honouring historical figures.

As debates surrounding accurate representation and the integrity of historical narratives continue, McMahon’s choice to utilise A.I. imagery when referencing civil rights icons like Wells stands as a critical point of contention. Critics argue it diminishes the profound significance of these individuals’ legacies and highlights the challenge of balancing modern technology with authentic depiction in historical discourse.
