A tragic plane crash on Sunday, 1 November, in Florida has resulted in the death of all nine individuals aboard a Learjet 60. The co-pilot, identified as Nathalia Filgueiras, was only 20 years old and had a passion for aviation from a young age, her mother, Camila Corteleti, revealed.

Corteleti said her daughter admired the sense of freedom that flying offered. “It was completely different seeing the world from the top,” she expressed, reflecting on Filgueiras’ love for aviation. Filgueiras, who had received her pilot’s licence at the remarkable age of 17, had already logged over 1,300 hours of flight experience and was employed by a private charter company located in Fort Lauderdale.

The tragic incident occurred around 12:50 p.m. local time, shortly after the jet departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas. The aircraft was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it plummeted into a residential area near Cresthaven, as confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Details regarding the crash are still emerging, and the identities of the other eight victims have yet to be disclosed. Filgueiras’ father declined to provide comments, and her mother was also unavailable for additional details at the time.
Described as a dedicated pilot, Filgueiras had expressed her ambition to fly from the age of 12. In a 2023 interview with a CBS affiliate, she noted the proud distinction of obtaining her pilot’s licence before her driving licence, stating, “I definitely do brag because people say, ‘oh you can’t drive,’ and I’m like, ‘yeah but I can fly’.”
In the moments leading up to the catastrophic descent, the aircraft’s pilot made an emergency distress call, revealing their alarming predicament. Recorded transmissions indicated that the pilot was in a state of distress while announcing, “We’re descending 8,000 — mayday, mayday — we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute.” The narrative grew increasingly desperate, with the pilot acknowledging an “overspeed condition” and stating that “we’re going to crash into the ground” before the final, chilling declaration: “we’re out of time.”
Witnesses reported that just before the crash, the pilot had communicated concerning ice accumulation on the plane, coupled with jarring turbulence experienced during the flight. This information has been corroborated by air traffic recordings, and the circumstances of the flight’s termination continue to be a focal point in investigations being conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
In the aftermath of the crash, harrowing video footage captured the moment the plane crashed, igniting a fireball that left a significant crater where the jet met the ground. Fortunately, it appears that no individuals on the ground were injured or killed during this tragic event, as noted by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
As investigations continue, questions linger regarding the causes of the crash. The NTSB is currently examining the flight data and cockpit recordings to establish a clear understanding of the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.
Filgueiras’ untimely death is a tremendous loss to her family, friends, and the aviation community. Her spirit and ambition to fly are truly remembered by her loved ones, who continue to mourn the young pilot’s passing amidst the unfolding details of this tragic incident.
